The short answer
With UGX 10,000,000 in Uganda you can fully fund six real businesses: a neighbourhood mini mart, a Class C drug shop, a printing and photocopy shop, tents and chairs hire for events, a 300-bird layer poultry unit, or a local food restaurant. Start-up costs run from about UGX 8,957,000 to UGX 9,995,000 on prices checked in September 2026, and net profit at the sales pace assumed for each runs from about UGX 382,000 to UGX 900,000 a month. The strongest all-round returns come from the printing and photocopy shop (about UGX 889,000 a month, a 21.4% net margin, paid back in about 11 months), the local food restaurant (about UGX 900,000 a month, 16.5% margin, the fastest payback at about 10 months) and tents and chairs hire (the highest margin of the six at 38.6%, though the work is seasonal).
Two things this band gets wrong more often than the profit figures. First, the layer poultry unit pays nothing for about 4.5 months while the birds grow to point of lay, so that gap belongs in your household budget, not in the profit column. Second, a restaurant at this size is already inside URA's EFRIS rules even without VAT registration, which the tax table below sets out in full. Run your own numbers on the profit calculator, or see the full business ideas hub for other capital bands, starting from UGX 5 million.
The six ideas, at a glance
All figures below are from real prices and conservative first-year sales assumptions checked in September 2026. Start-up cost is the full one-off spend to open; monthly profit is what is left after stock, staff, rent and other running costs, before income tax.
| Idea | Start-up cost (UGX) | Typical net margin | Estimated monthly profit (UGX) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neighbourhood mini mart | 9,824,000 | 6.2% | 463,000 |
| Class C drug shop (NDA licensed) | 9,790,000 | 8.9% | 402,500 |
| Printing, photocopy and stationery shop | 9,995,000 | 21.4% | 889,000 |
| Tents and chairs hire for events | 9,950,000 | 38.6% | 695,000 |
| Layer poultry for eggs (300 birds) | 9,680,000 | 14.9% | 382,000 |
| Local food restaurant (lunch and supper) | 8,957,000 | 16.5% | 900,000 |
What each of the six actually pays URA
This is the part most UGX 10 million guides skip. At this size you do not pay tax on profit; you pay presumptive tax on turnover, and the rate depends on your annual sales and on whether you keep records. The figures below apply URA's published presumptive table to each idea's own annual turnover at the sales pace assumed on this page.
| Idea | Annual turnover (UGX) | Presumptive tax with daily records (UGX a year) | Flat charge if you keep no records (UGX a year) | EFRIS? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tents and chairs hire | 21,600,000 | 46,400 | 80,000 | Ask URA which sector code your TIN carries |
| Layer poultry, 300 birds | 30,672,000 | 83,360 | 200,000 | No, farming is not a listed sector |
| Printing and photocopy shop | 49,920,000 | 179,600 | 200,000 | Ask URA: printing can be coded under manufacturing |
| Class C drug shop | 54,000,000 | 204,000 | 400,000 | No, retail of medicines is not a listed sector |
| Local food restaurant | 65,520,000 | 273,120 | 400,000 | Yes, from the day turnover passed UGX 10,000,000 |
| Neighbourhood mini mart | 90,000,000 | 430,000 | 900,000 | No, general retail is not a listed sector |
Read the third and fourth columns together. Keeping a daily sales book is worth UGX 33,600 a year to the tents business and UGX 470,000 a year to the mini mart, before you count what it saves you in stock losses. That is the cheapest return on effort anywhere on this page.
The EFRIS column is the one that catches people. Accommodation and food service is one of the 12 sectors URA named in 2025, and since 1 July 2025 every business in those sectors with turnover above UGX 10,000,000 a year must issue e-receipts or e-invoices through EFRIS whether or not it is registered for VAT. A restaurant turning over UGX 65,520,000 is well past that line while still nowhere near the UGX 300,000,000 VAT threshold. Two of the six sit on a boundary rather than clearly inside or outside, so confirm the sector code URA holds against your TIN before you assume you are exempt; do I need EFRIS sets out the full rule. One more caution: URA excludes professional practices (medical, dental, engineering, accounting and architectural) from presumptive tax altogether. A Class C drug shop is a retail business rather than a medical practice, but the classification changes which tax regime you are in completely, so get it confirmed rather than assumed.
Three shop and service ideas
Neighbourhood mini mart (groceries and household goods)
Every growing estate needs a shop for sugar, soap, flour, cooking oil and airtime nearby, and buying stock in bulk from Kikuubo wholesalers leaves a margin on each sale. Start-up runs about UGX 9,824,000: roughly UGX 900,000 for three months of rent, UGX 1,200,000 for shelves and fittings, UGX 800,000 for a used drinks fridge, about UGX 5,800,000 of opening stock, plus UGX 90,000 to register the business name with URSB and UGX 84,000 for a KCCA retailer trading licence.
One "sale" here is UGX 10,000 of mixed goods at shelf price, costing about UGX 8,600 to buy in, an estimated 14% gross margin. At UGX 250,000 of sales a day for 30 days, monthly revenue is about UGX 7,500,000 against UGX 6,450,000 of stock plus UGX 587,000 of rent, a helper's wage, power and fees, leaving roughly UGX 463,000 net profit a month (6.2% net margin). Payback is slow at this thin margin, about 21 months, though UGX 5.8 million of the start-up is stock still sitting on the shelves, not money spent and gone.
Risk to watch: the margin is thin enough that a slow month, or credit sold to neighbours, can wipe out the profit, and expired stock and shoplifting eat into it further. Best suited to fast-growing estates without a supermarket nearby, such as Kira, Najjera, Kyaliwajala, Namugongo and Bweyogerere.
Class C drug shop (NDA licensed)
In peri-urban and rural areas a licensed drug shop is often the first stop for malaria, pain and diarrhoea treatment. Start-up is about UGX 9,790,000: rent and fit-out to pass inspection, roughly UGX 5,000,000 of opening stock from licensed wholesalers, an NDA premises inspection and Class C licence, a KCCA or district drug store trading licence, URSB registration, and two months' salary for a qualified in-charge, an enrolled nurse, at an estimated UGX 500,000 a month.
One sale is UGX 10,000 of medicines at retail price, costing about UGX 7,000, an estimated 30% gross margin. At UGX 150,000 of sales a day, monthly revenue is about UGX 4,500,000 against UGX 3,150,000 of stock and UGX 947,500 of fixed costs, mostly the in-charge's salary, leaving about UGX 402,500 net profit a month (8.9% net margin). If the owner is themselves the qualified in-charge, profit rises by about UGX 500,000 a month.
Licence to note: a Class C drug shop must always have a qualified in-charge present, hold a certificate of premises suitability, and stock only the approved Class C list, never prescription medicines. NDA fees, the nurse's salary and the sales volume here are estimates: confirm current fees with NDA before committing.
Printing, photocopy and stationery shop
Schools, universities, courts, hospitals and offices create daily demand for copies, printing and forms. Start-up is about UGX 9,995,000: around UGX 3,000,000 for a refurbished Kyocera A3 colour copier, a laptop and photo printer, a laminator and binder, three months of rent, opening stationery stock, a small generator for power cuts, a KCCA printing and publishing licence and URSB registration.
One sale is a black-and-white A4 copy at UGX 150, costing about UGX 80 in paper, toner and power, a 46.7% gross margin. At 600 pages a day plus stationery, typing, lamination and passport photo sales, monthly revenue is about UGX 4,160,000 against UGX 2,327,000 of costs and UGX 944,000 of fixed costs (rent, an attendant, electricity and servicing), leaving about UGX 889,000 net profit a month (21.4% net margin), paid back in about 11 months.
Location decides everything here: next to a school or campus the shop can pay back within a year; on a quiet street it may struggle to cover rent. Refurbished copiers also break down, and parts cost money.
Three events, farming and food ideas
Tents and chairs hire for events
Introductions, weddings, burials, graduations and church functions happen most weekends, and most families hire rather than own tents and chairs. Start-up is about UGX 9,950,000: two 100-seater PVC party tents, 200 plastic chairs, 10 tables, a small storage room, tarpaulins and repair tools, local marketing, URSB registration and a local trading licence.
One sale is an event package, a 100-seater tent with 100 chairs for a day, at about UGX 150,000, costing about UGX 75,000 in transport and casual labour, a 50% gross margin, the highest of the six ideas here. At 12 package hires a month, monthly revenue is about UGX 1,800,000 against UGX 900,000 of direct costs and UGX 205,000 of fixed costs, leaving about UGX 695,000 net profit a month (38.6% net margin), paid back in about 14 months.
The catch is seasonality: December and Easter can pay for several slow months, but a wet season or a run of cancellations leaves the tents idle. Chairs also get broken or go missing at events, so take a deposit and count them out and back.
Layer poultry for eggs (300 birds)
Egg prices rose through September 2026, and eggs sell every day to shops, hotels, schools and rolex vendors. Start-up is about UGX 9,680,000: 300 day-old layer chicks, feed to point of lay, a deep-litter house for 300 birds, feeders, drinkers and laying nests, vaccines, and a part-time worker for the 4.5-month rearing period before the hens start laying.
One sale is a tray of 30 eggs at about UGX 12,000, costing about UGX 8,940, mostly feed, a 25.5% gross margin. Once 285 surviving hens are laying at 75%, that is about 213 trays a month, giving monthly revenue of about UGX 2,556,000 against UGX 1,904,220 of feed and UGX 270,000 of fixed costs, leaving about UGX 382,000 net profit a month (14.9% net margin).
Feed decides the outcome: feed is up to 70% of the cost of keeping layers, and maize and bran prices more than doubled by September 2026, so a farmer who mixes their own feed does far better than one buying ready-made mash. Budget 4.5 months with no income before the first eggs, and count the roughly 25-month payback from that point.
Local food restaurant (lunch and supper)
Workers, traders and students buy a cooked lunch every day, and a clean local-food restaurant with reliable portions and a TV for football builds regulars fast. Start-up is about UGX 8,957,000: rent, two gas sets, cooking equipment, plates and furniture for about 24 covers, a used fridge, fit-out to pass a health inspection, a KCCA restaurant trading licence, medical certificates for food handlers and URSB registration.
One sale is a plate of matooke, rice or posho with beans, groundnuts or meat, at about UGX 6,000, costing about UGX 3,300, a 45% gross margin. At 35 plates a day for 26 trading days (910 plates), monthly revenue is about UGX 5,460,000 against UGX 3,003,000 of food cost and UGX 1,557,000 of fixed costs (rent, a cook, two helpers, power and water), leaving about UGX 900,000 net profit a month (16.5% net margin), the fastest payback of the six at about 10 months.
Reaching 35 plates a day usually takes a few months, so budget 2 to 3 slower months from the working capital in the start-up figure above. Food prices are also rising, Uganda's annual inflation hit 4.1% in August 2026, driven partly by food items, so reprice the menu often.
A worked first month: the local food restaurant
The local food restaurant has the strongest combination of profit and payback of the six ideas, so here is how the numbers build up once it reaches its planned 35 plates a day for 26 trading days. Treat this as the month you are aiming for, not necessarily month one: reaching 35 plates a day usually takes a few months, so budget for 2 to 3 slower months first.
- Plates sold: 910 (35 a day x 26 days) at UGX 6,000 each = UGX 5,460,000 revenue
- Food, charcoal or gas, and about 10% wastage: 910 plates x UGX 3,300 = UGX 3,003,000 cost of food
- Gross profit: UGX 5,460,000 minus UGX 3,003,000 = UGX 2,457,000 (45% gross margin)
- Rent UGX 450,000, cook UGX 350,000, two helpers UGX 500,000, electricity UGX 100,000, water UGX 80,000, garbage and LC fees UGX 20,000, licence set-aside UGX 7,000, breakages and repairs UGX 50,000 = UGX 1,557,000 fixed costs
- Net profit: UGX 2,457,000 minus UGX 1,557,000 = about UGX 900,000 (16.5% net margin)
Against a start-up cost of about UGX 8,957,000, that is roughly a 10-month payback once the restaurant is at full volume. A slower month at 25 plates a day earns less, and a strong one near a market or industrial area, at 60 plates a day, can push net profit well over UGX 2,000,000. Run your own numbers, different rent, staff count or plate price, on the business profit calculator.
Licences, tax and paperwork
Every idea above needs the same basic paperwork, plus a few extras depending on what you sell. None of this is legal or tax advice, it is the current rule as published by each authority in September 2026, and URSB, KCCA and URA are the ones who can give a ruling on your specific case.
- Business name with URSB: reserve a name for UGX 35,000, then register it for UGX 55,000, about UGX 90,000 in total, done online through URSB's e-registry.
- Trading licence: a KCCA (or your local council) trading licence, priced by business category and area grade, for example UGX 31,500 to 210,000 a year for a general retailer, UGX 105,000 to 412,500 for printing and publishing, UGX 54,000 to 165,000 for a drug store and UGX 36,000 to 187,500 for a restaurant. It runs on the calendar year and is paid before you start trading.
- TIN and presumptive tax: a Tax Identification Number from URA is free, and an individual with a National ID can get one online in minutes. Presumptive tax is nil below UGX 10,000,000 of annual turnover, then rises in bands with records kept: 0.4% of turnover above UGX 10 million in the 10 to 30 million band, UGX 80,000 plus 0.5% of turnover above UGX 30 million in the 30 to 50 million band, UGX 180,000 plus 0.6% above UGX 50 million in the 50 to 80 million band, and UGX 360,000 plus 0.7% above UGX 80 million in the 80 to 150 million band. Every one of those is lower than the flat fee URA charges a business with no records. See the table above for what each idea on this page actually owes.
- EFRIS: compulsory for any VAT-registered business, whatever it sells. If you are not VAT registered, it still applies once turnover passes UGX 10,000,000 a year in one of URA's 12 listed sectors, and accommodation and food service, which covers a restaurant, is one of them.
Sector extras: a Class C drug shop needs an NDA certificate of suitability of premises and a Class C licence, with a qualified in-charge on duty at all times, and it may stock only the approved Class C list, never prescription medicines. A restaurant needs a KCCA public health inspection and medical certificates for every food handler. The NDA fees, the in-charge's salary and the sales volumes used for the drug shop on this page are estimates rather than published figures, so confirm current fees with NDA before you commit.
Set this up first
Whichever of the six you pick, set it up in this order. The cheap and free steps come first, and we are named only at the stage where we genuinely earn the money.
- The basics, at their real cost. A URSB business name is about UGX 90,000 in official fees (UGX 35,000 to reserve, UGX 55,000 to register) on the e-registry; owners routinely report agents charging several hundred thousand to several million shillings for the same filing. A TIN from URA is free and instant online with a National ID. Then pay the trading licence for your trade and area grade, about UGX 31,500 to 210,000 for a retailer, UGX 105,000 to 412,500 for printing and publishing, UGX 36,000 to 187,500 for a restaurant.
- The habits that cost nothing. Business money on its own line or account, every sale and cost written down the same day, WhatsApp Business for orders and bookings, and a free Google Business Profile so the shop, the restaurant or the tent hire number shows on Maps when somebody nearby searches. The tents and chairs business in particular lives or dies on being findable at the moment a family is arranging a function.
- Once there is stock to lose or staff at the till. At this band that is the mini mart, the drug shop and the restaurant on day one, and the printing shop as soon as an attendant runs the counter alone. Growth Informer Business records sales, stock and the daily cash-up on a phone, with URA EFRIS e-receipts as a setting you switch on when URA requires it, which for the restaurant on this page is straight away.
- Once customers look the business up before they come. A website starts , with a monthly care plan if you want it kept running for you. At this size it earns its keep for the tents and chairs business, where people compare suppliers before phoning, and rarely for a mini mart whose customers are the 200 households around it.
- A custom build, priced as , only when no ready-made tool handles your workflow. Nothing on this page is there yet.
- When a penalty, assessment, audit letter or deadline is already live. We are a URA-registered tax agent: we set the systems up, file, object to an assessment and represent you, and we quote after seeing the notice.
Match the step to your stage. A UGX 10,000,000 mini mart needs steps one to three and no website at all in its first year.
How to protect the profit you make
Making UGX 400,000 to 900,000 a month on paper means nothing if it leaks out before you see it. Three habits protect it more than any tool:
- Keep business money separate from personal money, in its own mobile money line or account, from day one.
- Do not sell on credit to friends and neighbours unless you can genuinely afford not to be repaid; the mini mart and the restaurant above both name unpaid credit as a real risk to the margins shown.
- Write down every sale and every cost, every day, even in a notebook. It is the only way to know whether you actually made the UGX 400,000 to 900,000 a month the numbers above suggest, or something quite different, and as the tax table shows it is also worth UGX 33,600 to UGX 470,000 a year in lower presumptive tax. See business record keeping in Uganda for a simple system.
Every figure in this guide, start-up costs, prices, margins and profit, is an estimate from prices and rules checked in September 2026, most from real listings and official fee pages, some clearly estimates where no verified figure was found, particularly for the drug shop and the printing shop. Treat them as a planning tool, not a guarantee of what you will earn, and confirm licence fees with KCCA, tax rules with URA and business name questions with URSB before you commit money.
Frequently asked questions
What business can I start with 10,000,000 shillings in Uganda?
With UGX 10 million you can realistically open a neighbourhood mini mart, a printing and photocopy shop, tents and chairs hire for events, a Class C drug shop, a layer poultry farm of about 300 birds, or a small local food restaurant. Start-up costs for these six run from about UGX 8,957,000 to UGX 9,995,000 on prices checked in September 2026, and net profit ranges from roughly UGX 382,000 to UGX 900,000 a month once each business is running at its planned volume.
What is the most profitable business with 10m in Uganda?
By net margin, tents and chairs hire for events is highest at 38.6%, though the work is seasonal. By monthly profit, the local food restaurant and the printing and photocopy shop are close, at about UGX 900,000 and UGX 889,000 a month. The restaurant also has the fastest payback of the six, at about 10 months.
What are good business ideas in Uganda with small capital?
If UGX 10 million is more than you have right now, the band just below, about UGX 5 million, covers a boda boda on hire, a mobile money and airtime kiosk, a two-chair barbershop, broiler chicken farming and oyster mushroom growing, with start-up costs from about UGX 4.75 million and monthly profit typically UGX 100,000 to 800,000. This site's business ideas hub links every capital band from UGX 500,000 upward.
Is there a good business in Uganda for ladies to start with 10 million?
None of the six ideas here are gender-specific, but a few suit a lady running the business hands-on especially well: the printing and stationery shop, the mini mart and the tents and chairs hire business all work managed personally with one or two staff, and none need heavy physical labour.
Can a student start a business in Uganda with 10 million?
Yes, though a student with limited time on site does better with a business that does not need someone present every day. Tents and chairs hire for events needs active management around 12 bookings a month, mostly on weekends, which fits around lectures far better than a restaurant or a drug shop that needs daily attendance.
How much profit can I make from a UGX 10 million business in Uganda?
From the six ideas costed at this level, honest net profit runs from about UGX 382,000 a month (layer poultry) to about UGX 900,000 a month (the local restaurant) once you reach the sales volumes assumed here, before income tax. A slow month can bring some of these close to zero, and a strong month can push the restaurant or the printing shop above UGX 2,000,000. These are planning estimates from research done in September 2026, not a guarantee.
