The short answer
Adding a business to Google Maps means creating and verifying a free Google Business Profile at business.google.com/add. Enter your real business name, the closest matching category, and either a storefront address or a hidden service area, then verify with the method Google offers you, video recording is now the most common.
Verification is usually reviewed within a few days. Never buy, incentivise or swap reviews, Google can restrict or unpublish a profile for fake engagement, and a wrong address or keyword-stuffed name is the fastest way to get suspended. Pair a verified profile with a proper business website for the best local search results.
Step by step
These are the steps in order, with the mistake that trips up most Ugandan businesses at each one.
| Step | What to enter | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Start the listing | Go to business.google.com/add, or check Google Maps first for an existing unclaimed listing | Creating a duplicate listing instead of claiming the existing one |
| 2. Sign in | A Google Account the business controls, not a personal one | Using a staff member's personal account that later leaves the business |
| 3. Name and category | The real business name exactly as used in real life, plus the closest matching category | Keyword stuffing the name with extra services or "best" |
| 4. Location | A real address customers can visit, or hidden with a service area if you go to customers | Using a virtual office or fake address for a non-service-area business |
| 5. Contact details | Phone number and website URL | Leaving these blank or out of date |
| 6. Verify | Whichever method Google offers: video, phone, email, or instant if Search Console is already verified | Ignoring the verification request and leaving the profile pending |
Verification methods Ugandan businesses usually get
Google decides which verification methods it offers per listing, you cannot always choose. In 2026, video recording is the most common method offered. Phone or email verification appears for some businesses. Instant verification can happen if the site is already confirmed in Google Search Console. Postcard verification is rarely offered any more.
Video verification is typically reviewed within a few days. Complete whichever method you are offered promptly, a profile left unverified for long can lose momentum.
No storefront? Use a service area
If you visit or deliver to customers rather than serving them at a fixed address, plumbers, cleaners, home-service trades, mark the profile as a service-area business and hide the exact address. You can list up to 20 service areas by city or postal code, covering the whole area you actually serve.
Age-restricted businesses, alcohol, cannabis, weapons, are not allowed to hide their address as a service-area business.
Categories, photos and completing the profile
Choose the closest matching primary category, you can add secondary categories later as the business grows. Once verified, complete the rest of the profile: hours, photos, a plain description, attributes, and the products or services you actually offer, then link your website.
A complete profile with real photos converts better than a bare listing. If you do not have a website yet, see how to create a website in Uganda before you link one.
Reviews: what is allowed
Ask genuine customers to leave a review and reply to every review you get, good or bad. Google prohibits offering payment, discounts or free goods or services in exchange for posting, changing or removing a review.
Breaking this rule can get a profile blocked from receiving new reviews for a period, existing reviews unpublished, or a warning banner shown to anyone who visits the listing. A business can appeal, but it is far simpler not to trade reviews for anything in the first place.
What gets a listing suspended
Keep the profile accurate over time, hours, address, category, since letting it drift is itself a suspension risk. Common triggers include fake or incentivised reviews, a wrong or fake address such as a virtual office used by a non-service-area business, a keyword-stuffed business name, and listing a prohibited category or product.
A verified, accurate profile pairs well with active local search work. See SEO services in Uganda if you want ongoing help being found, or Google Ads in Uganda for paid visibility while your organic listing builds up. For the site the profile should link to, see web design in Uganda.
