The short answer
A POS machine in Uganda costs UGX 140,000 to 250,000 for a 58mm Bluetooth receipt printer that works with the phone you already have, UGX 190,000 to 980,000 for an Android handheld with a built-in printer, and about UGX 1,370,000 for a full counter till: a used laptop, 80mm receipt printer, barcode scanner and cash drawer at typical prices. These are Kampala marketplace asking prices seen in September 2026, and they move weekly.
Budget for software separately: the hardware only prints and scans, while the POS software records the sale, the stock and the cash-up. If you are VAT registered, or in one of URA's 12 EFRIS sectors with annual turnover of UGX 10 million or more, that software must issue EFRIS e-receipts or e-invoices (check your business with Do I need EFRIS?). You do not need a special "EFRIS machine" for that, and no EFD price was found in September 2026. A bank card machine is a different device that comes from banks and payment providers.
POS machine prices in Uganda, item by item
These are asking prices on Kampala marketplaces, mainly Jiji, seen on 19 September 2026. Low is the cheapest credible price seen, sometimes a Jiji category "from" price; typical is the middle of the listings seen. Use them to set a budget, then confirm the price with the seller on the day.
| Item | Low price | Typical price | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Receipt printer, 58mm thermal (Bluetooth or USB) | UGX 140,000 | UGX 235,000 | Pairs with your phone; one-person counters |
| Receipt printer, 80mm thermal with auto-cutter | UGX 300,000 | UGX 400,000 | The counter standard; premium models to UGX 750,000 |
| Barcode scanner, handheld USB | UGX 105,000 | UGX 130,000 | Wireless models from UGX 120,000 |
| Cash drawer (opens from the printer) | UGX 140,000 | UGX 240,000 | Needs a printer with an RJ11 drawer port |
| Android handheld POS with built-in printer | UGX 190,000 | UGX 980,000 | Few listings; check it prints, not only takes cards |
| All-in-one touch screen POS terminal | UGX 440,000 | UGX 1,320,000 | Few listings; compare the specification |
| Used business laptop (HP EliteBook, Core i5) | UGX 450,000 | UGX 600,000 | Runs POS software or URA's portal and desktop app |
| Tablet for waiters (Samsung Galaxy Tab) | UGX 120,000 | UGX 250,000 (new Tab A 10.1) | 2019 model, no longer updated; Tab A8 from UGX 700,000 |
| Barcode label printer | UGX 400,000 | UGX 600,000 | Thermal transfer models to UGX 1,250,000 |
| Customer pole display | UGX 260,000 | UGX 350,000 | Shows the customer the price |
| Electronic cash register, 81-key | UGX 850,000 | UGX 850,000 | Up to UGX 1,248,800; not an EFRIS device on its own |
| EFD (URA electronic fiscal device) | Not listed | No price found | Must be certified by URA; ask URA |
Two rows are thin. Only one full listing each was seen for Android handhelds and all-in-one touch terminals, so treat their typical price as indicative. Headline prices mislead too: Jiji's barcode scanner category said "from USh 20,000" and its Android POS category "from USh 90,000", figures that probably include accessories, mislistings or card terminals without a printer. The table leaves those two figures out.
POS machine or card machine? Two different things
In Uganda "POS machine" is used for two different devices. The first is the till hardware in the table above, which you buy outright and own. The second is a bank card terminal: the small machine a customer taps or inserts a bank card into to pay.
Card terminals are supplied by banks and payment providers rather than bought on marketplaces, and the provider sets the charges. So "POS machine charges" usually means their fees, not a purchase price. Before you sign, ask each provider to put these in writing:
- the charge on each card payment
- any monthly, rental or deposit fee for the terminal
- how many days the money takes to reach your account
- who repairs or replaces the terminal when it fails
A card terminal takes the payment and nothing else. Your POS still records the sale, the stock and the receipt, so enter card sales in the POS like cash and mobile money, and the cash-up shows each payment type separately.
What each piece of POS hardware does
Receipt printer price in Uganda
Receipt printers here are thermal: no ink, only paper rolls. A 58mm printer costs UGX 140,000 to 250,000; a portable 58mm Bluetooth model was listed at UGX 220,000 and a USB plus Bluetooth model at UGX 250,000. It pairs with a phone and suits a kiosk, boutique or one-person counter.
An 80mm printer with an auto-cutter costs UGX 300,000 to 750,000, typically about UGX 400,000. An Xprinter with an auto-cutter was listed at UGX 350,000 and the ECO 250 at UGX 750,000. It is the counter standard: wider receipts, a clean automatic cut and usually a port that opens the cash drawer. A kitchen or bar printer should connect by LAN (network cable) so it can sit away from the till.
Barcode scanner price in Uganda
A handheld USB barcode scanner costs UGX 105,000 to 140,000: the XB 2055 was listed at UGX 105,000 and the Gsan GS-M930 at UGX 135,000. Wireless scanners start at about UGX 120,000. The scanner reads the barcode and the POS finds the item and its price, so staff do not type or guess. It earns its place in shops that sell packaged, barcoded goods and matters less in a restaurant.
Cash drawer
A cash drawer costs UGX 140,000 to 250,000, typically about UGX 240,000. It plugs into the receipt printer with an RJ11 cable and opens when a sale prints, so the drawer is opened by a recorded sale rather than by hand.
Android POS machine
An Android handheld POS is a phone and receipt printer in one, sometimes with a card reader: UGX 190,000 to 980,000, though only one full listing was seen: a Smart Z90 with a smart card reader at UGX 980,000. It suits waiters taking orders at the table, delivery riders and market stalls. Check that your POS app installs on it and that it has a printer, not only a card reader. What a phone-based setup can run day to day is in run your business from your phone.
Touch screen POS terminal
An all-in-one touch terminal puts the screen and computer in one counter unit. Prices ran from about UGX 440,000 to UGX 1,320,000 and more, but only one full listing was seen, so compare the processor, memory and ports before paying the higher figure.
Laptop or tablet instead of a terminal
A used business laptop does the same counter job for less: refurbished HP EliteBooks with a Core i5 were listed at UGX 450,000 to 700,000, typically about UGX 600,000. It runs POS software, or URA's web portal and desktop app. For waiters, a new Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 (2019 model, 32GB) was listed at UGX 250,000, but that model no longer gets Android updates; the newer Galaxy Tab A8 10.5 starts at about UGX 700,000.
Extras
- Barcode label printer, for shops that label their own stock: UGX 400,000 to 1,250,000, typically about UGX 600,000.
- Customer pole display, which shows the customer the price: UGX 260,000 to 350,000.
- Electronic cash register (81-key): UGX 850,000, with one listing at UGX 1,248,800. It adds up sales, but a plain cash register is not an EFRIS device on its own.
Three POS setups and what each costs in total
Three setups cover a kiosk, a shop counter and a restaurant. Totals use the typical prices above, with the cheapest and dearest listings in brackets.
1. Phone plus Bluetooth printer: about UGX 235,000
For: a kiosk, boutique, drug shop or any counter with one person selling. You buy: a 58mm Bluetooth receipt printer and use the smartphone you already have. Total: about UGX 235,000 (UGX 140,000 to 250,000). If you want one device instead of two, an Android handheld with a built-in printer is UGX 190,000 to 980,000. See running a business from your phone for what the phone does besides printing receipts.
2. Shop counter till: about UGX 1,370,000
For: supermarkets, hardware shops, pharmacies and anywhere a queue forms. You buy:
- Used business laptop: UGX 600,000
- 80mm receipt printer with auto-cutter: UGX 400,000
- USB barcode scanner: UGX 130,000
- Cash drawer: UGX 240,000
Total: 600,000 + 400,000 + 130,000 + 240,000 = UGX 1,370,000 per till (UGX 995,000 with the cheapest listings, UGX 1,840,000 with the dearest). A two-till supermarket that labels its own stock adds a label printer: 2 x 1,370,000 + 400,000 to 1,250,000 = UGX 3,140,000 to 3,990,000.
3. Restaurant or bar: about UGX 2,520,000
For: a restaurant or bar with waiters and a kitchen. You buy: one counter till (UGX 1,370,000), an 80mm kitchen printer (about UGX 400,000; choose a LAN model) and three waiter tablets at UGX 250,000 each (UGX 750,000). Total: about UGX 2,520,000. Waiters can carry Android handhelds instead of tablets if you want receipts printed at the table.
Set this up first
Hardware is not step one, and buying it early is how money gets wasted. This is the order that costs least, with the real cost of each basic step, and us named only where we genuinely earn the money.
- The basics, at their real cost. Register the business name with URSB: UGX 35,000 to reserve plus UGX 55,000 to register, about UGX 90,000 in official fees. Owners commonly report paying agents about UGX 600,000 to several million for the same paperwork, so the official fee and the agent's price are two different numbers. A private company with nominal share capital up to UGX 5,000,000 is UGX 105,000 plus 0.5 percent stamp duty. A TIN from URA is free and takes about five minutes online with a National ID. Then the KCCA or council trading licence for your trade and area grade, payable before you start trading and again by 1 January: a general shop is UGX 31,500 (Grade IV) to UGX 210,000 (Grade I) a year, a kiosk UGX 6,000 to UGX 75,000, a drug store UGX 54,000 to UGX 165,000, a restaurant UGX 36,000 to UGX 187,500.
- The habits that cost nothing. Keep business money in its own account or mobile money line, write every sale and expense down the same day, put your prices on WhatsApp Business, and claim a Google Business Profile so people searching nearby find the shop: how to add your business to Google Maps. A hardware budget spent before these are in place buys a printer for a business that still cannot say what it sold yesterday.
- Once there is stock to lose or somebody else at the till: software first, hardware second. Decide what the system must do, then buy the printer and scanner it needs. Our POS system page sets out the three setups and what each one suits, and Do I need EFRIS? tells you in a few questions whether URA requires e-receipts from you, which changes what you need before it changes what you buy.
- Once customers look you up before they come: a website, , with a monthly care plan if you would rather not maintain it. See how to create a business website in Uganda.
- When no ready-made tool fits the way you sell: a custom build, quoted once we understand exactly what it has to do.
- When a penalty, assessment, audit letter or EFRIS deadline is already live: we are a URA-registered tax agent. We set systems up, file, object and represent you, and we quote after seeing the notice.
Match the step to the stage. A UGX 500,000 stall needs steps 1 and 2 and nothing on this price list: a daily record and a WhatsApp catalogue. A shop with a cashier and barcoded stock is at step 3 and should price the whole counter kit, not just the printer, because a printer without a scanner or a drawer usually means paying twice.
New or used, and where people buy POS machines
New versus used
Printers, scanners and drawers are cheap new, and the gap between the cheapest and a typical listing is small: UGX 105,000 against UGX 130,000 for a scanner. Buying these used saves little and often means no warranty.
The computer is where used makes sense. Refurbished HP EliteBooks were listed at UGX 450,000 to 700,000, and one 840 G1 with 8GB of memory came with a one-year warranty at UGX 590,000. Price did not follow the specification: an 840 G1 with 4GB was listed at UGX 680,000, more than one with 8GB at UGX 550,000. Compare memory, battery and warranty, not the asking price.
POS machines on Jiji, in shops and from suppliers
Jiji is the online marketplace people search for POS hardware: its point-of-sale category held over 300 ads when we checked, and the listings we saw were mostly from sellers in Kampala Central, with others in Nakawa and Rubaga. Prices there are asking prices, so there is room to negotiate. The other routes are electronics and computer shops in central Kampala, where you can test before you pay, and POS hardware suppliers that sell and install; ask what the installation covers.
Do not buy more till than the shop earns
Work it out before you go to Kikuubo. A UGX 1,370,000 counter kit is roughly 14 days of takings for a counter turning over UGX 100,000 a day, and roughly 3 days for one turning over UGX 500,000. A UGX 235,000 phone-and-printer setup is 2 to 3 days of takings at UGX 100,000 a day. Neither figure includes the software or the paper. If the kit costs more than about a fortnight of takings, start with the phone and the 58mm printer and buy the counter kit out of what the first setup stops leaking.
What to check before you pay
- Test it with your own device. Pair the printer with your phone or plug it into your laptop and print a receipt from the POS software you will use.
- Paper width. 58mm for phones and handhelds, 80mm for counters. Check which width your software prints on.
- Connection. USB, Bluetooth or LAN. Put kitchen and bar printers on LAN so they can sit away from the till.
- Drawer port. A cash drawer needs a printer with an RJ11 drawer port.
- Android handhelds. Check the Android version, that your POS app installs, and that there is a printer, not only a card reader.
- Used laptops. Check the battery, charger, memory and keyboard, and get the warranty in writing.
- "EFRIS machines". Ask for proof that any EFD is certified by URA. URA's brochure says acquiring an EFD that is not linked to or authenticated by URA is an offence, with a fine of up to UGX 6 million, up to three years in prison, or both.
- A proper receipt. If the seller is required to use EFRIS, ask for an EFRIS e-invoice or e-receipt. Without one, your business cannot claim an income tax deduction for the purchase (Income Tax Act, section 22(3)(m)).
EFD machine price and the EFRIS question
No price for an EFD (electronic fiscal device) was found in September 2026. None of the point-of-sale ads on Jiji was an EFD, and URA's brochure lists no price or supplier. URA says the business pays for the device, support and receipt validation. An EFD is a URA-certified device with protected fiscal memory, and URA points it at fuel and gas stations and at businesses that sell in the field, on routes or on the move.
A shop, pharmacy or restaurant can issue EFRIS receipts without one: through URA's web portal or desktop app, which carry no URA charge, or through a POS or ERP connected to EFRIS system to system, which the business pays to connect. Buying hardware does not make you compliant on its own. What counts is that each receipt comes back from EFRIS with a Fiscal Document Number (FDN), a verification code and a QR code.
Who must issue EFRIS receipts
- Every VAT-registered business, whatever its size. The VAT registration threshold rose from UGX 150 million to UGX 300 million a year on 1 July 2026; some URA pages still showed the old figure when we checked, so confirm with URA if you are near it.
- Businesses in URA's 12 listed sectors, since 1 July 2025, VAT registered or not. They include accommodation and food service (hotels, lodges, restaurants), construction, manufacturing, and wholesale and retail of fuel. Those with annual turnover below UGX 10 million are exempt and may still use EFRIS voluntarily.
Two examples. A restaurant selling UGX 40 million a year and not VAT registered has had to issue EFRIS receipts since 1 July 2025. A general retail shop selling UGX 120 million a year, not VAT registered and outside the 12 sectors, is not required to under these rules; it can run a POS with EFRIS off and switch it on if it registers for VAT.
From 1 July 2026, a business that must use EFRIS and fails to issue an e-invoice or e-receipt faces a penal tax of double the tax due or UGX 200,000, whichever is higher. EFRIS is your business's own obligation, and rulings come from URA (toll free 0800 117 000), not from us. Check where you stand with Do I need EFRIS?, follow the steps in how to register for EFRIS, and read the full rules in our EFRIS guide for Uganda.
Software: the cost that runs on the machine
The hardware prints and scans. The software records each sale, reduces stock, splits cash, mobile money and card at cash-up and, when it applies, issues the EFRIS receipt. Budget for it next to the hardware. There are four routes:
- URA web portal or desktop app: no URA charge, and suited to businesses with a small number of sales and no billing system. The portal needs a one-time password that lasts 24 hours; the desktop app does not.
- Growth Informer Business: our own live cloud POS, stock and business platform for sales, stock, purchases, expenses and several branches. It runs on a phone, with restaurant and hotel modules for kitchen orders, tables, rooms and bookings. It issues URA EFRIS e-receipts and e-invoices today, and EFRIS is a setting: switch it on when URA requires it, or voluntarily, and leave it off until then without changing systems. It is priced from UGX 1,000,000 a year for one business; ask on WhatsApp for a demo, and we show it working before you commit.
- A custom POS built around your workflow, for chains, wholesalers and manufacturers: , as a fixed quote before work starts, on a 50/25/25 payment plan, and you own the source code and data.
- The POS or ERP you already use: before you replace a system that works, ask whether it can be connected to EFRIS instead. We scope the connection against URA's published specification and confirm it is feasible before we quote. Meeting the fiscal rules stays your business's own obligation.
Also budget for receipt paper rolls, mobile data or broadband, and a UPS or power bank so a power cut does not stop the till. If you take cards, add the card provider's charges. How the pieces fit together, setup by setup, is on our POS system page.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a POS machine in Uganda?
At Kampala marketplace prices seen in September 2026, a 58mm Bluetooth receipt printer for use with your own phone costs UGX 140,000 to 250,000, an Android handheld POS with a built-in printer UGX 190,000 to 980,000, and a full counter till (used laptop, 80mm printer, barcode scanner and cash drawer) about UGX 1,370,000. Software is a separate cost.
What is the receipt printer price in Uganda?
A 58mm thermal receipt printer costs UGX 140,000 to 250,000, and an 80mm printer with an auto-cutter UGX 300,000 to 750,000, typically about UGX 400,000, at marketplace prices seen in September 2026. Kitchen and bar printers are best on a LAN connection so they can sit away from the till.
What is the barcode scanner price in Uganda?
A handheld USB barcode scanner costs UGX 105,000 to 140,000, typically about UGX 130,000, and wireless scanners start at about UGX 120,000 (September 2026). Category headline prices from UGX 20,000 are probably accessories or mislistings.
What is the EFD machine price in Uganda?
No EFD price was found in September 2026: there were no EFD listings among the point-of-sale ads on Jiji, and URA's brochure lists no price or supplier. URA says the business pays for the device, support and validation. A shop can issue EFRIS receipts without an EFD, through URA's portal or desktop app (no URA charge) or a POS connected to EFRIS. Only buy an EFD that URA has certified.
What are POS machine charges in Uganda?
For a bank card terminal, the charges are set by the bank or payment provider that supplies it, so ask for the fee on each card payment, any monthly or rental fee, and how fast the money reaches your account, in writing. Till hardware such as printers, scanners and drawers is a one-off purchase.
Is an Android POS machine enough for a small shop?
For one person selling, often yes: an Android handheld with a built-in printer (UGX 190,000 to 980,000) or your own phone with a Bluetooth printer (UGX 140,000 to 250,000) covers sales and receipts. Move to a counter till with a scanner and cash drawer when queues form or you sell many barcoded goods, and check that your POS app installs on the device first.
