The short answer
The best restaurant POS in Uganda is the one that survives your real service day: tables and kitchen order tickets, Mobile Money, EFRIS e-receipts if you are VAT registered, a plan for power cuts, and support you can reach in Kampala. No single system wins for every restaurant, so test two or three with your own menu before you pay.
Growth Informer Business is our own cloud POS at growthinformer.com, so read our view with that in mind. It covers tables, kitchen order tickets, modifiers, bookings, Mobile Money recorded as a payment method, and an EFRIS e-receipt switch for VAT-registered businesses. It is a cloud system, so plan for internet and power cuts. The full feature list is on our restaurant POS page.
Seven checks that matter more than a feature list
Most POS brochures look the same. A restaurant in Kampala is not the same as a shop in Mbarara, so judge every system on these seven points. Last reviewed: October 2026.
1. Kitchen order tickets
When a waiter sends an order, the kitchen must see it at once, with the right table and the right changes. Ask to see the order go from the table to the kitchen, then watch what happens when a customer adds a drink ten minutes later.
2. Tables and modifiers
Real menus have changes: no onions, extra chapati, well done, no ice. A POS that cannot hold these as modifiers pushes your staff back to scribbled notes, and that is where wrong orders start. Check that you can open, move and close a table bill without confusion.
3. Mobile Money
Many Ugandan diners pay with MTN or Airtel Money, so ask how the POS records it. In Growth Informer Business, Mobile Money is recorded as a payment method inside the Multiple Pay window, and the Payments (MoMo) tray records confirmed payments. It does not send a payment prompt to the customer's phone, so your cashier confirms the money first, then records it. Our Mobile Money POS guide explains the flow.
4. EFRIS e-receipts
Whether your restaurant must issue EFRIS e-receipts depends on your VAT registration and the latest URA notices, so confirm on ura.go.ug or with your accountant before you decide. A VAT-registered business using Growth Informer Business can switch EFRIS e-receipts on or off. We do not claim URA accreditation. Our guide to EFRIS for restaurants and hotels goes through the steps.
5. Power cuts and internet
Ask every vendor the same blunt question: what happens when the power or internet drops during Friday dinner? Growth Informer Business is a cloud system, and we do not promise offline selling. Plan for a UPS on the router, a mobile data backup, and a paper ticket routine for the kitchen as a last resort.
6. Support in Kampala
When a POS fails at 7pm, a ticket reply tomorrow is no use. Ask who answers, in which hours, and whether someone can visit. We are a US-based company with remote teams, including a team in Kampala, and clients reach us on WhatsApp.
7. How pricing works
Ask whether you pay once or monthly, per branch or per user, and what is extra: setup, training, hardware, support. Get it in writing. A cheap start can become an expensive year.
How to compare your options side by side
Restaurant owners in Uganda usually weigh a few kinds of option: a free or low-cost cloud POS app, an ERP with an add-on module for EFRIS, a local POS vendor, and systems like ours. We make no claims here about any other product's features or prices, because those change and you should hear them from the vendor. Use the right-hand column as your question list.
| What to check | Growth Informer Business (ours) | Ask any other vendor |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen order tickets | Tables and kitchen order tickets are built in | Show me an order going from table to kitchen and an added item later |
| Tables and modifiers | Tables, modifiers and bookings for restaurants | Can I add no onions or extra cheese without typing a note? |
| Mobile Money | Recorded as a method in the Multiple Pay window, with a Payments (MoMo) tray for confirmed payments. No prompt is sent to the customer's phone | Does it send a prompt, or do my staff record it by hand? |
| EFRIS e-receipts | VAT-registered businesses can switch EFRIS e-receipts on or off. We claim no URA accreditation | Is it built in or an extra module? Who supports it when URA rules change? |
| Power cuts and internet | Cloud system, so we do not promise offline selling. Back up with a UPS and mobile data | What exactly still works with no internet? |
| Support in Kampala | Team in Kampala, reachable on WhatsApp | Who answers, when, and can they visit? |
| How pricing works | Quoted after a demo, based on your branches and needs | What is once-off, what is monthly, and what costs extra? |
If you also run a busy bar counter, read our bar POS guide too, because bar tabs and bottle stock behave differently from table service.
If you want ingredient stock to go down as dishes are made, ask every vendor about recipes. In Growth Informer Business, recipes with their ingredients are set up through the Manufacturing module, and recording a production run uses up the ingredients and adds the finished stock.
A 30 minute test before you buy
Do not choose from a sales demo alone. Ask each vendor for a trial login or a screen share on your own menu, and run the same test on all of them.
- Load ten real dishes and drinks, including three with modifiers.
- Open a table, send an order to the kitchen, add an item, then close the bill.
- Take one payment in cash and one by Mobile Money, and see where each shows up in the reports.
- If you are VAT registered, switch on e-receipts and check what the customer receives.
- Unplug the internet for two minutes. Note exactly what the staff can and cannot do.
- Close the register at the end and ask whether the totals match your cash and Mobile Money.
- Send the vendor a support question on WhatsApp and see how long the answer takes.
If a vendor will not let you do this, that tells you something. We are happy to run it with you on a call with your own menu.
When Growth Informer Business is not the right choice
We would rather tell you now than lose your trust later.
- You need full offline selling. We are cloud based and do not promise offline mode. If your area has frequent long outages and no backup internet, a system built for offline use may suit you better.
- You want the customer's phone to receive a payment prompt from the POS. Ours records confirmed Mobile Money payments but does not send the prompt.
- You run only a bar. Bar tabs and bottle stock have their own needs. Start with the bar POS guide linked above.
- You have one coffee counter and no kitchen. A simpler setup may be enough. Our cafe POS page shows what a small counter needs.
- You already have an ERP your accountant runs. Adding a second system can cost more in confusion than it saves.
If none of these describe you, and you want tables, kitchen tickets, stock, several branches and reports in one cloud system, then it is worth a demo.
What to do this week
First, check your VAT and EFRIS position on ura.go.ug or with your accountant. Second, write down your own answers to the seven checks above: how many tables, how many branches, how you take Mobile Money, and what you do when the power goes. Third, test two or three systems with the 30 minute list.
Growth Informer Business is used by 6,500+ businesses and has Android and iOS apps, and the same system also runs the hotel module for rooms and bookings if you have a guest house or lodge attached. Message us on WhatsApp on +256 702 946 946 and tell us how many tables you run. We will show you the system with your menu, answer the power cut and Mobile Money questions straight, and give you a written quote if it fits.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a restaurant POS cost in Uganda?
It depends on the business, so we do not quote a figure on a page. The cost changes with the number of branches, tables, users and any hardware you need. Ask every vendor, including us, for a written quote that separates once-off costs from monthly ones. For Growth Informer Business, message us on WhatsApp or use the form and we will quote after a short demo.
Does the POS send a Mobile Money prompt to the customer?
Not in Growth Informer Business. Mobile Money is recorded as a payment method in the Multiple Pay window, and the Payments (MoMo) tray records confirmed payments. Your cashier confirms the money has arrived first, then records it. Ask any other vendor exactly how theirs works.
Will the POS work during a power cut?
Growth Informer Business is a cloud system, so it needs internet, and we do not promise offline selling. Keep your router and a device on a UPS, have mobile data as a backup, and keep a paper ticket routine for the kitchen. Ask every vendor what still works with no internet.
Does my restaurant have to use EFRIS?
That depends on your VAT registration and the current URA notices, which we have not restated here, so check ura.go.ug or ask your accountant. If you are VAT registered, Growth Informer Business lets you switch EFRIS e-receipts on or off. We do not claim URA accreditation.
