The short answer
A bar POS system in Uganda should do four jobs: record every drink sold, show who sold it, take cash and Mobile Money into one register, and tell you each night what should be left on the shelf. Growth Informer Business is our own cloud POS and business management system, used by 6,500+ businesses, with Android and iOS apps. For a bar it tracks stock per bottle and per tot, sales by waiter, open tables and tabs, and a register you open and close every day.
It will not stop a dishonest bartender by itself. What it does is turn every missing bottle into a number you can question the next morning. A VAT-registered bar can switch EFRIS e-receipts on. The system does not send a payment prompt to the customer's phone: it records the Mobile Money payment once you have confirmed it. The fairest way to judge it is a demo on your own drinks list, which we run on WhatsApp.
Where a bar really loses money
A bar rarely loses money in one big hit. It leaks in small, quiet ways that a notebook cannot show.
- Heavy tots and free pours. A 750 ml bottle poured in 25 ml tots should give 30 tots. If it gives 26, four tots of sales are missing, and nobody can say why.
- Drinks served but never rung. The waiter takes cash, the drink leaves the shelf, and no sale is recorded.
- Tabs that disappear. A table runs a tab at midnight, the shift changes, and the bill is half remembered.
- Mobile Money that matches nothing. Money arrives on the phone, but nobody can say which sale it belongs to.
- Stock that moves without a record. Crates leave the store for the bar counter on a verbal word.
The cure is the same every time: one record of what came in, what was sold and what is left. Our guide on how to stop stock theft in a shop covers the habits, and they work just as well behind a bar counter. The software makes those habits quick enough to keep up on a busy Friday.
How a night runs in Growth Informer Business
Before you open
You set up each drink as a product with its units, for example the bottle and the tot, or the crate and the single bottle. You can hold stock in more than one location, such as the store room and the bar counter, and move crates between them with a transfer. That way the counter stock is what the bartender answers for. The cashier opens the register with the starting cash.
If you mix cocktails, recipes with their ingredients are set up through the Manufacturing module. Recording a production run uses up the bottles and other ingredients and adds the finished drinks to stock.
During service
Each waiter has their own login, with permissions you control, so the sales report shows who sold what. Orders can be held against a table or saved as a draft, so a tab stays open until the customer pays. If your lounge also serves food, the same system handles tables and kitchen order tickets, as described on our restaurant POS page.
Taking payment
At payment, the Multiple Pay window lets you split one bill across cash, card and Mobile Money, so a table of four can pay four different ways and the register still adds up.
Closing the night
At closing you close the register and read the report: cash, card and Mobile Money recorded, sales by waiter, and what stock should remain. Then someone counts the bar and compares. The gap is your loss figure for the night, and it is far easier to chase on the same morning than at month end.
Notebook, basic till or Growth Informer Business
There is no shame in a notebook. Many good bars started with one. The question is what each option can and cannot tell you at 2am when you are tired and want to go home.
| Notebook | Growth Informer Business | Basic till |
|---|---|---|
| Stock: counted by hand, often only at month end | Stock: per bottle and per tot, by location, reduced on every sale | Stock: often sales totals only, stock control depends on the model |
| Waiters: initials beside the order, if remembered | Waiters: own login and a sales report by waiter | Waiters: often one shared login at the counter |
| Tabs: a page of names and amounts | Tabs: tables and drafts keep an order open until paid | Tabs: varies, some hold a bill and some do not |
| Payments: cash in a drawer, Mobile Money on a phone, matched from memory | Payments: cash, card and Mobile Money recorded as methods in one register | Payments: cash and card, with Mobile Money usually noted by hand |
| Closing: add up and hope | Closing: close the register and read the report | Closing: print the day's total |
| Owner away: you see it when you are back with the book | Owner away: reports from a phone or computer, across branches | Owner away: you see it at the till |
The honest trade-off: a system asks for discipline. Every drink must be rung, and every delivery must be entered. If your team will not do that, no software helps, and a basic till or a notebook will do the same job with less effort.
Mobile Money, cash and EFRIS at the bar
In many Ugandan bars, part of the night is paid on phones. In Growth Informer Business, Mobile Money is a payment method you pick in the Multiple Pay window, next to cash and card. The Payments (MoMo) tray records the payments you have confirmed. To be clear: the system does not send a payment request to the customer's phone. Your cashier checks that the money has arrived, then records it against the sale. Our page on Mobile Money POS in Uganda explains this in more detail.
If your bar is VAT-registered, EFRIS e-receipts can be switched on or off inside the system. We do not claim URA accreditation, and whether your bar must issue EFRIS receipts is a question for URA or your tax agent. Our guide to EFRIS for restaurants and hotels is a good place to start, since many bars also serve food.
When you should not buy this yet
We would rather tell you now than sell you something that sits unused.
- You run a very small bar, pour every drink yourself and know your stock by heart. A notebook may be enough for now.
- Nobody will count stock on a regular schedule. The system can only compare against a count someone actually does.
- You expect the customer's phone to get an automatic Mobile Money prompt from the till. We do not do that.
- Internet at the counter is unreliable. Growth Informer Business is a cloud system, so plan for a steady connection, with a phone hotspot as a backup.
- Your tax agent has told you that you need a specific approved device. Check with them first, because we do not claim URA accreditation.
If none of these describe you, and you want to know what each night really earns, then a demo is worth an hour of your time.
How to get started
Growth Informer Software Services is a US-based company with remote teams around the world, including a team in Kampala, and a US team member joins client video calls. You do not need to prepare much.
- Send your drinks list. A photo of the menu and the shelf is enough, and tell us how many counters or branches you run.
- We build a demo around your bar. You see your own products, tots and waiters on screen, not a generic shop.
- You decide. If it fits, we agree the setup and the price for your business before you commit.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a bar POS system cost in Uganda?
It depends on the business: how many bars or counters you run, how many staff need logins and how much setup help you want. We do not publish a figure on this page. Ask for a demo or a quote on WhatsApp and we will give you a clear answer for your bar.
Can it track stock per bottle and per tot?
Yes. You set up each drink with its units, for example the bottle and the tot, and stock reduces as you sell. For the figures to be useful, the opening stock must be counted properly and the bar counted again regularly so you can compare.
Can it send a Mobile Money request to the customer's phone?
No. Mobile Money is recorded as a payment method inside the Multiple Pay window, and the Payments (MoMo) tray records payments you have confirmed. The customer pays through their own Mobile Money app or agent, and your cashier records it.
Can I see sales by waiter?
Yes. Each waiter gets their own login with permissions you set, so the reports show sales by person. You can limit what each person can see or change.
Does it work with EFRIS?
A VAT-registered bar can switch EFRIS e-receipts on or off inside Growth Informer Business. We do not claim URA accreditation. For what your bar must do, check with URA or your tax agent.
Can mixed drinks and cocktails take several bottles off stock?
Yes, through recipes in the Manufacturing module, next to the per bottle and per tot tracking described on this page. You list the bottles and measures that go into a cocktail. When you record a production run (a batch of that drink being made), the system uses up those ingredients from stock and adds the finished drinks. Ask for a demo with your own cocktail menu so you can see how it fits your service.
