The short answer
A good supermarket POS system in Uganda scans barcodes at the till, holds thousands of products with their units and pack sizes, and shows you sales, stock and supplier orders in one place. Growth Informer Business does this as a cloud system with Android and iOS apps, for one shop, several tills or several branches.
A VAT-registered shop can also switch EFRIS e-receipts on or off inside the same system, so you do not change software when your tax position changes. Read our guide to EFRIS for shops and supermarkets first if you are unsure. We quote after a short demo, because the right set-up depends on your tills, branches and product list.
What a supermarket needs from a till system
A supermarket is not a small shop with more shelves. It sells hundreds or thousands of fast items, each with its own barcode, unit and supplier. Queue speed matters too: a cashier who types every price slowly loses customers at six in the evening. A retail POS in Kampala, Mbarara, Gulu or Mbale should do these things well.
- Scan and sell. The cashier scans the barcode and the item lands on the bill. Items without a barcode can be found by name.
- Barcode labels. Print labels for loose goods and your own packed items so every line can be scanned.
- Open and close the register. Each cashier opens a register and closes it at the end of the shift, so a shortage points to a shift and a person.
- Users and roles. You decide what each person may do. A cashier can sell without being able to change settings.
- Customers and credit sales. Useful when you supply offices, schools or hotels on account.
- Selling price groups. Keep a shelf price and a different price for trade buyers on the same item.
Stock, units and suppliers: where supermarkets lose money
Most losses in a supermarket are quiet: an item sold below cost, a carton that never reached the shelf, a supplier invoice nobody checked. A supermarket inventory system in Uganda earns its place by making these visible. For the wider picture, see our page on the POS and inventory system for Uganda.
Units and pack sizes
You buy sugar or rice by the sack and soda by the crate, and you sell by the kilo or the bottle. Products in Growth Informer Business carry units and variations such as size, so the count on screen can match the count on the shelf. Tell us in the demo which items you buy in one unit and sell in another, and we will show you how that product is set up.
Purchases and suppliers
Keep a list of your suppliers and raise a purchase order for each delivery. When goods arrive you record the purchase and stock goes up. At the next delivery you can compare what you ordered with what came.
Counting what is on the shelf
A system tells you what stock should be there. A regular count on a few fast items each week, checked against the screen, tells you whether it is. Do both. The software makes the count short, but it cannot replace walking the aisles.
Several tills, branches and daily reports
Several tills. Each cashier logs in as themselves and works from their own register, so sales are tied to a person. The owner or manager sees all tills together.
Branches. Stock is kept per location, and you can move goods between locations with a transfer, so the main store and the mini-market both show the right balance. If you run or plan more than one shop, read how multi-branch inventory management in Uganda works.
Daily reports. At closing time you can check sales for the day, stock levels, and expenses you recorded. Because it is a cloud system with Android and iOS apps, an owner who is away from the shop can still look at the numbers. Growth Informer Business is used by 6,500+ businesses, and supermarkets are one of the kinds of shop it is set up for.
EFRIS e-receipts and Mobile Money at the till
EFRIS
If your supermarket is VAT-registered, you can switch EFRIS e-receipts on in the system, and switch them off again if your position changes. We are not claiming URA accreditation, and we will not tell you that you must or must not use EFRIS. That depends on your registration and the current rules, so confirm it on ura.go.ug or with your tax adviser.
Cash, card and Mobile Money
The cashier records how the customer paid. Cash, card and Mobile Money are payment methods inside the Multiple Pay window, so one bill can be split, for example part cash and part Mobile Money. The Payments (MoMo) tray records payments you have confirmed.
One honest limit: the system does not send a payment prompt to the customer's phone. The customer pays on their own phone, the cashier confirms the money has arrived, and then records it.
Growth Informer Business or notebooks and Excel?
Many supermarkets start on a notebook and a spreadsheet. That works for a while. This table shows where it stops working. If you are also comparing other tills, our guide to the best POS system in Uganda lists what to ask each supplier.
| What you need | Growth Informer Business | Notebook and Excel |
|---|---|---|
| Barcode scanning at the till | Scan and the item is on the bill | Cashier writes or types each price |
| Thousands of products with units | One product list with units and variations | Hard to keep correct beyond a few hundred lines |
| Stock after each sale | Updated from sales and purchases | Counted by hand, often weeks late |
| Cashier accountability | Own login, register opened and closed per shift | One shared book, no name on a shortage |
| Several branches | Stock per location with transfers | Separate files that never match |
| EFRIS e-receipts | Switch on or off for a VAT-registered shop | Handled outside the till |
When we are not the right fit
- You run a very small kiosk with a few dozen items. A notebook may be enough for now.
- Your till area has no stable internet. This is a cloud system, so fix the connection first.
- You want the system to push a payment prompt to the customer's phone. It does not do that.
- You are looking for a hardware bundle. We are the software; the equipment is a separate buying decision.
What to bring to a demo
A demo is most useful when it uses your real shop. Bring these answers and we can set the demo around them:
- Roughly how many products you sell, and how many already have barcodes.
- How many tills and how many branches you run, or plan to run.
- Which items you buy in one unit and sell in another, such as cartons and pieces.
- Whether you are VAT-registered and want EFRIS e-receipts on.
- How customers pay: cash, card, Mobile Money or credit.
You will also need the equipment at the till, such as a computer or tablet, a barcode scanner and a receipt printer. Our guide to POS machine prices in Uganda explains that side. Frequently asked questions
Can the system handle thousands of products?
Yes. Products sit in one list with units and variations such as size, and barcode labels can be printed for items that do not have one. Tell us your approximate product count when you ask for a demo.
How much does a supermarket POS system cost in Uganda?
It depends on your business, mainly the number of tills and branches, so we do not publish one figure. Ask for a demo on WhatsApp or the form and we will give you a quote based on your shop. Equipment such as a scanner and printer is bought separately.
Does it send a Mobile Money prompt to the customer?
No. Mobile Money is recorded as a payment method in the Multiple Pay window, and the Payments (MoMo) tray records payments you have confirmed. The customer pays on their own phone and the cashier records it.
Do I have to use EFRIS?
That depends on whether your business is VAT-registered and on current URA rules, so check ura.go.ug or ask your tax adviser. If you are VAT-registered, Growth Informer Business lets you switch EFRIS e-receipts on or off.
Can I run several tills and branches on one account?
Yes. Each cashier has their own login and register, stock is kept per location, and you can transfer goods between locations. The owner can check reports from the Android or iOS app.
How do I load 2,000 products when I start?
Loading your products is part of the setup when you start with us, so you are not left to do it alone. Message us with your approximate product count and we will explain how your list would be loaded. The video lessons on our tutorials page show the steps, and it helps to begin with your fastest selling products.
