The short answer
Meta ads (Facebook and Instagram) work for a small business when you have a clear local or time-limited offer, tracking that counts real enquiries, and someone who answers every lead within minutes. They are weaker than search for people who already know what they want, because social leads are colder: the person was scrolling, not searching. Boosting a post rarely fixes that: it is the one-button route, with little control over what the system optimises for and often no tracking behind it to show which clicks became enquiries.
If you want to hire a Facebook ads manager (or an agency that also covers Instagram) who sets the account up properly, tests creative in a visible order and says so when the numbers do not support more spend, that is the work we do. We do not guarantee results, and for some businesses Google Ads is the better first channel. Our team also builds the landing pages your ads send people to.
What Meta ads are good for, and what they are not
Meta shows your ad to people who were not looking for you. That is its strength and its limit. You are creating interest, not catching it, so the offer has to be easy to understand in two seconds.
Where Meta ads tend to work
- Local offers: an opening, a free first session, a seasonal promotion, an open day.
- Bookings: appointments, classes, tastings, viewings, where a short form or a message starts the sale.
- Leads you can follow up fast: quotes for home projects, consultations, clinics, tutoring, services where a quick call turns interest into a conversation.
- Warm audiences: showing a second ad to people who already visited your site or watched your video.
Where they tend to disappoint
- Urgent, need-it-today purchases: someone with a burst pipe searches, they do not scroll.
- Very small audiences or very complex sales: there may not be enough people or enough signal for the system to learn from.
- Businesses that cannot reply quickly: the lead goes cold before anyone calls.
We say this plainly to every new client: cold social leads are lower intent than search leads. Expect more enquiries that go nowhere, and judge the channel by qualified enquiries and customers, not by clicks. People who are already searching are better served by search, and SEO for small business captures that demand over time rather than renting it.
How we test creative, in plain steps
Most small accounts fail because nobody decides what is being tested. Our process is deliberately boring, and you can see every step in the reports.
- 1. One offer, one audience question. We agree the single offer the ad sells and who it is for, before any design starts.
- 2. A few versions that differ in one way. For example the same offer shown through a price angle, a proof angle and a problem angle. If everything changes at once, you learn nothing.
- 3. Judge on enquiries, not likes. We let each version run long enough to mean something, and we do not edit ads every day because the first morning looked bad.
- 4. Cut the losers, build on the winner. New versions are variations of what worked, not random new ideas.
- 5. Refresh before it goes stale. When the same people have seen an ad many times and the cost per enquiry creeps up, we replace it.
- 6. Close the loop with you. Every month we ask which enquiries became customers, because that is the number that decides whether to spend more.
The honest limit: with a small budget, testing is slow. Meta says an ad set generally needs around 50 results (your chosen event, such as a submitted lead) within seven days of its last significant edit to settle out of its learning phase. If your budget cannot buy that many enquiries, we will tell you how few versions it can test at once instead of pretending you can test ten, and we avoid editing live ads daily because edits can restart learning.
The pixel and conversion tracking, set up properly
If Meta cannot see which clicks turned into enquiries, it optimises for whoever clicks most, and that is rarely your best customer. Setup is the unglamorous part that decides the rest.
- Pixel and Conversions API together. The browser pixel alone misses events when browsers or settings block it. Sending the same events from your server through Meta's Conversions API fills those gaps, with each event matched so it is not counted twice.
- Events named for what matters. A submitted enquiry, a booking, a purchase or a call click, not just page views.
- Tested before spend starts. We check each event in Meta's own testing tools and confirm the domain, so we are not guessing later.
- Your own ad account. You should own the account, the pixel and the data, and be able to see every number we see.
- Consent that works. In the UK and EU, advertising cookies and pixels generally need a visitor's opt-in consent before they fire. We set tracking up to respect your consent banner, so reported numbers may be lower than the real ones. Your own legal adviser should confirm what your site needs.
- A human backup. A "how did you hear about us?" question on forms and calls, because no tracking is perfect.
Lead forms or a landing page, and speed to lead
Meta's built-in instant forms are quick to fill in, so you get more submissions, and more of them are low quality because the effort was close to zero. A landing page asks for more effort, sends fewer people through, and the ones who do arrive have thought about it. Neither is always right.
- Instant forms suit offers where you can phone or message back quickly. Meta offers a "higher intent" form type that adds a review screen before submitting, which usually means fewer but firmer leads than the volume-focused type.
- Landing pages suit higher-priced services, bookings that need detail, and anything where you want to explain, show proof and ask better questions first. We build these, including the landing pages and direct booking form we did for Lorato Lodges and Camping in Chobe, Botswana.
- A fair test: run both on the same offer for a month and compare qualified enquiries, not submissions.
Speed to lead is the part you control
A lead that fills in a form at lunchtime and hears nothing until tomorrow has usually moved on. We set up instant alerts to your phone, a short reply script and a simple tracking sheet, but your team has to answer. Our team in Kampala works East Africa Time (UTC+3), which overlaps the UK and European working day and the start of the US East Coast day, so questions about your account get answered in your working hours too.
What management costs and how we work
Ad spend goes from your card to Meta. Our fee is for the work: setup, creative direction, testing, optimisation and reporting. Growth Informer Software Services is a US-based company with remote teams around the world, and a US team member joins your video calls. You get a fixed quote before work starts, and one-off builds such as a landing page follow a 50/25/25 payment plan. We have managed over USD 100k of client ad spend, and the team that sets your account up is the team that keeps running it.
| Item | Growth Informer | What to check elsewhere |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly management | From a month | Whether the fee is flat or a cut of your ad spend |
| Tracking and account setup | Scoped in the fixed quote before work starts | Whether setup is billed separately or skipped |
| Reporting | Spend, enquiries and cost per enquiry in plain numbers | Whether you only see clicks and reach |
| Who does the work | A senior team that stays on your account | Whether the person you meet runs the account |
If you also need a site that converts the traffic, see our guide to small business website costs in the US, UK and Europe.
When not to hire us for Meta ads
- Your budget is very small. If it only buys a handful of enquiries a month, tests will be too thin to learn from. We will say so and suggest waiting or starting with search.
- Nobody can answer leads quickly. Fix that first. No ad setup will rescue a slow reply.
- Your customers search for you. If they type what you sell into Google, start there. Our Google Ads management page covers it.
- You need a guaranteed number. Nobody honest can promise one on Meta. We give you measured results and a clear view of what to change.
- You only need a one-off setup. A good freelancer may be enough. Our freelancer versus agency guide explains the trade-off.
If none of those describe you, send us the offer and we will tell you whether Meta looks like a fit.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to hire a Facebook ads manager?
Our management starts from a month, plus the ad spend you pay Meta directly. You get a fixed quote before any work starts, so there are no surprises.
Why did boosting posts get me nothing?
A boosted post is built to get reactions and reach, not enquiries. It usually has no tracking for leads, no clear offer and no follow-up plan. A proper campaign optimises for the action you want, such as a form submission or a booking.
Are Instagram ads for small business different from Facebook ads?
They are bought in the same Meta ads account, and we test placements together. Instagram leans on visual, short-form creative, so the ad formats and copy often need adjusting, but the offer, tracking and follow-up matter more than the placement.
Can you guarantee leads or sales from Meta ads?
No. Nobody can honestly guarantee it. We set up proper tracking, test creative in a clear order and report enquiries and cost per enquiry, so you can decide with real numbers whether to spend more.
How fast should I reply to a Meta lead?
As fast as you realistically can, ideally within minutes and by phone or message rather than email alone. Social leads cool quickly because the person was only scrolling when they filled in the form.
