The short answer
Most new websites are missing from Google for one of two reasons: Google has not found them yet, or somebody told Google not to list them. To check, type site:yourwebsite.com into Google. If pages appear, you are listed. If nothing appears, set up Google Search Console (it is free), send in your sitemap and ask Google to look at your home page. Google says it can take a few days to a few weeks to visit a new page. Showing up high for a search like "dentist in Kampala" takes months, and nobody can promise a position. If you want a team to carry this work, see our SEO services in Uganda (SEO means helping Google find and show your pages).
Being listed is not the same as being found. Google and AI assistants use the same basic signals: clear pages that say what you sell and where, and the same business name, phone number and address everywhere your business appears. Fix those and you give both a fair chance to find you. We cannot promise a position on either.
How to check if your website is on Google
How do I check if my website is on Google?
Open Google on your phone or laptop. Type site: followed by your address, with no space, for example site:yourshop.co.ug. Press search and read what comes back.
- Pages appear: Google has listed your site. If you expected ten pages and see only one, Google has found the home page but may not have reached the rest yet.
- No results, or a message that nothing matched: Google has not listed your site, or you typed the address wrongly. Check the spelling, then go to the causes below.
- Old or wrong pages appear: Google is showing an earlier version. Search Console, explained further down, lets you ask it to look again.
Try it with and without www, and on your phone data as well as Wi-Fi. This check shows if you are listed. It does not show where you rank, and Google says it does not always list every page it knows. For a sure answer on one page, paste its address into the box at the top of Search Console (steps below).
My website shows when I type the name but not when I search for my service
This is normal for a young site, and it is a very common worry. When you type your own business name, only you match, so Google finds you easily. When a customer types "salon in Entebbe" or "furniture delivery Nairobi", you compete with every other salon, shop, Jiji listing and directory page. Google needs a reason to put you above them.
That reason comes from pages that clearly name your service and your town, from other places that mention or link to you, and from reviews and a Google Business Profile. Time helps too. You are listed, but not yet trusted for that search.
The usual reasons a website is not showing
In plain words, these are the causes we see again and again. Go down the list in order, because the first ones are quick to fix.
- The site is told not to be listed. A small setting called "noindex" tells Google to stay away. Developers often switch it on while building and forget to switch it off. On WordPress, look under Settings, then Reading, for the box "Discourage search engines from indexing this site". If it is ticked, untick it. Check this first.
- There is no sitemap. A sitemap is a list of your pages, made for Google. Without it, Google can still find your site, but more slowly.
- The site is brand new. Google has simply not visited yet. Nothing is broken. A site that is a few days old needs patience and the steps below, not a rebuild.
- Nobody links to it. Google finds new sites by following links from other places. If your site is not linked from your Facebook page, your Google Business Profile or any other website, Google has no road to it.
- The pages are thin. One page with three lines, or text copied from a supplier or a competitor, gives Google little to list. A proper business site needs a page for each main service, with real details. Our guide on how to create a business website in Uganda shows what to include.
- The business name does not match. If your website says one name, your Google listing says another and your Facebook page says a third, Google and AI assistants cannot be sure they are the same business. Use one name, one phone number and one address everywhere.
- The site is old, slow or broken on phones. If this describes yours, a website redesign may be the honest fix, rather than more tweaking.
How long does a new website take to show on Google?
How long does it take for a new website to show on Google?
Be careful with anyone who gives you an exact day. Honest timing looks like this.
- Showing up in a site: search: usually days to a few weeks. Google itself says a visit can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. It is often faster if you set up Search Console, send a sitemap and have a few links pointing to the site.
- Showing for your service and town: usually months, and longer in crowded fields such as restaurants in Nairobi or hotels in Zanzibar.
- Staying there: it depends on keeping pages useful, adding reviews and keeping your details the same everywhere.
Nobody can guarantee a first-page position, and Google does not sell a place in its normal results. If someone promises page one in a week, ask how, and be ready to walk away. AI assistants that answer questions about local businesses draw on much the same clear pages and consistent details, so the same work helps there too, with no promises.
Set up Google Search Console and request indexing
Google Search Console is a free tool from Google. It shows you if Google can see your pages and tells you why not when it cannot. Think of it as a message line between you and Google. Here is the simple way to start.
- Step 1: sign in with a Google account that belongs to your business, not your developer's own account. That way you own the access.
- Step 2: add your website and prove it is yours. Your developer can do this by adding a small code to the site or to your domain settings. It takes a few minutes.
- Step 3: open the Sitemaps section and enter the address of your sitemap. This is often yourwebsite.com/sitemap.xml. Wait for the word Success.
- Step 4: use the URL inspection box at the top. Paste your home page address, then choose Request indexing. Repeat for your most important service pages. Do not send the same page again and again: Google says asking twice does not make it faster.
- Step 5: after a few days, open the Pages report. It lists pages that are listed and gives a reason for each page that is not.
How do I see how many people visit my website?
Use two free tools together. Google Analytics counts visitors: how many came, which pages they read, whether they used a phone, and whether they came from Google, Facebook or a link you shared. Visits from WhatsApp often show as "direct", because WhatsApp does not tell Analytics where the click came from. Search Console counts the times your site appeared in Google searches and how many people tapped through. Your developer adds a small piece of code once and both start collecting numbers. Check them once a week, not once an hour, because small sites move slowly at first.
What to do in the first week after your website goes live
What should I do in the first week after my website goes live?
Your goal is simple: give Google and your customers a few real roads to the site. Here is a plain checklist.
- Day 1: set up Search Console, send the sitemap and request indexing of your home page.
- Day 1: share the link on your WhatsApp status and in your customer groups. Real people clicking is a good sign too.
- Day 2: add the website to your Google Business Profile. Our guide to Google Business Profile setup walks through it.
- Day 3: put the link in your Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X bios, and on your Jiji or Jumia seller profile if it has room for a link.
- Day 3: check that your business name, phone number and address are written the same way on the website, Google and social pages.
- Day 4: send your first happy customers a WhatsApp message with your Google review link and ask for an honest review. Do not offer a gift or discount in return.
- Day 5: print the web address on receipts, delivery bags and boda boda delivery stickers, so people can find you later.
- Day 7: repeat the site: search and read the Search Console Pages report. Write down what changed, then check again in two weeks.
Is it technical or content, and when to ask for help
When it is a content problem, not a technical one
If site: shows your pages and Search Console says they are listed, the technical part is working. If customers still cannot find you for your service, the problem is content. Typical signs: one page tries to cover everything, the pages never say the town or the service in plain words, there are no prices or details, or the text was copied. The fix is writing, not code: one clear page per main service, real photos, your town, your phone number and WhatsApp button.
When you do not need us
If your site is only a few days old, do the steps above first. They cost nothing. If the only problem is a ticked noindex box, your developer can fix it in minutes. And if you only need to be found by people who already know your name, a Google Business Profile and a Facebook page may be enough for now.
When asking for help makes sense
If you have done the checklist, waited four to six weeks and still see nothing, or if you have no time to write and watch the reports each month, it is reasonable to ask for help. For businesses in the capital, see our SEO services in Kampala. Our monthly care is explained in our guide to website maintenance cost in Uganda. We give a fixed quote before work starts, you pay in three steps of 50, 25 and 25 percent, and you own your code and data. Message us on WhatsApp at +256 702 946 946.
| What you need | Our monthly care | Doing it yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly checks and small fixes | a month | Free, but it takes your time |
| Watching Search Console | Included in the monthly care, as agreed in your quote | You open it once a week |
| Writing service pages | We can write them, quoted separately | You write one clear page per service |
| Your time | A few minutes on WhatsApp | A few hours in week one, then about 30 minutes a week |
Frequently asked questions
Why is my website not showing on Google?
Most often because the site is new and Google has not visited yet, because a noindex setting tells Google to stay away, because there is no sitemap, or because nobody links to the site. Type site:yourwebsite.com into Google to check. Then set up Google Search Console, send your sitemap and ask Google to index your home page.
How long does it take for a new website to show on Google?
Usually days to a few weeks to be listed, and months to rank for a service search such as a trade or shop in your town. No one can guarantee a position.
How do I check if my website is on Google?
Type site: followed by your web address into Google, with no space. If your pages appear, you are listed. If nothing appears, you are not listed yet. For more detail, open the Pages report in Google Search Console.
How do I see how many people visit my website?
Use Google Analytics to count visitors and see which pages they read, and Google Search Console to see how often your site appeared in Google searches. Both are free, and your developer can add them in a few minutes.
How much does it cost to have someone look after this each month?
Our monthly care starts from a month. You get a fixed quote before any work starts, and it says what the monthly care includes. If your site is only days old, you can do the checklist on this page yourself for free.
