Facebook ads for safari companies that bring qualified inquiries

Facebook and Instagram can fill a safari company's inbox with US and European travellers, or burn the budget on junk clicks. The difference is the video, the inquiry route, the placements and what you choose to measure.

The short answer

Facebook and Instagram ads work for safari companies when they show the real experience in video, send people to one clear inquiry route, aim at travellers in the US, UK and Europe, and are judged on cost per qualified inquiry, not cost per click. Exclude Audience Network placements: they are the placement group most often blamed for cheap, accidental clicks from people who were never going to plan a trip.

Meta puts your camp, lodge or itinerary in front of people who were not searching yet, while Google ads for tour operators catch the ones who already are. Most operators end up needing both. Meta is usually the better place to build desire and a retargeting audience, and search is usually better for dates that are close. Either way the money is wasted if an inquiry sits unanswered, so the ad is half the job and the follow-up is the other half.

Show the real experience, not the brochure

A safari is bought on trust and emotion. The guest is spending a large sum on a place they have never seen, with a company they cannot visit first. Polished brochure photos look like every other operator's. Short, honest video of what a guest will actually live through does the selling that a headline cannot.

What to film

  • Your own guide at the start of a game drive, in your own vehicle, saying in one sentence what the group will look for that morning.
  • The place itself: a gorilla trek briefing before the walk in Bwindi or Volcanoes, a Masai Mara morning in crossing season, a boat on the Chobe River with elephants at the bank, a Serengeti camp at dusk.
  • The small things guests remember afterwards: breakfast in the bush, the room, the staff by name, the sundowner stop.
  • A past guest saying one honest line to camera, only with their permission.

How to cut it for Meta

Shoot vertical for Reels and Stories, put the hook in the first three seconds, add captions because many people watch on mute, and end with one plain line: where, how many days and what to do next. Run three or four different clips against each other and let cost per qualified inquiry decide which one stays. Do not use stock footage of animals you cannot show. Guests notice, and the ones who book on it arrive disappointed. If you have no footage yet, one afternoon of a guide filming on a phone is a better first spend than any ad budget.

Lead form, WhatsApp or landing page: where should the click go?

Where the ad sends people decides the quality of what lands in your inbox. There are three routes, and each one trades volume against quality and against the work your team has to do afterwards.

Three inquiry routes for a Meta ad compared on volume, quality and follow-up effort
Inquiry routeVolume and qualityFollow-up effort
Instant form inside Facebook or InstagramMost inquiries for the money on the default "more volume" form, but quality is mixed. Some people tap by accident and the details they leave are thin. The "higher intent" form type adds a review step and cuts volume.High. Almost every lead needs a message or call just to find out whether it is real.
WhatsApp clickFewer, warmer conversations, and many guests find it easy. Little is captured up front, so you cannot tell dates, group size or country until you ask.High and immediate. Someone has to reply fast, and the chat can drift without a clear next step.
Landing page with a short form and a WhatsApp button (our default)Fewer inquiries than an instant form, but the best quality. The guest reads your offer first, then gives dates, group size and country, or chats if they prefer.Lowest. You arrive at the first reply already knowing what they want, and you can track form and chat as separate results.

Our default and its limits

For most safari companies we send the click to a landing page with a short form (dates, group size, country, email) and a WhatsApp button beside it. It filters out accidental taps and gives your team something real to answer. The trade-off is fewer raw inquiries, so a landing page makes sense only if your numbers are judged on qualified inquiries rather than on volume. If the landing page is slow on a phone or hides the form, an instant form will beat it, so test before deciding. If you do use an instant form, add a question on travel dates and pick the higher intent type, which asks people to review their answers before they send. A lodge with a very quick WhatsApp team can do well sending the click straight to chat.

Audiences in the US and Europe, and why Audience Network goes off

Your guests are mostly in the US, the UK and continental Europe, so that is where the ads should run, not the country where your camp sits. Run each market as its own ad set, for example the US, the UK and one or two continental markets, so you can see which one produces qualified inquiries instead of blending them into one average. US travellers often plan many months ahead and write detailed questions before paying. Europeans have a shorter flight and sometimes a shorter planning window. Treat these as habits to test, not rules.

Who to target

Start with the country plus travel and wildlife interests. Once you have a guest email list you have permission to use (consent matters for European guests), build a lookalike audience from past guests. Retarget people who watched most of a video or visited your website. Add the country to the ad copy so the viewer sees themselves in it.

Switch off Audience Network

Meta can show your ad on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and on Audience Network, a set of third-party apps and websites outside Meta. Depending on how a campaign is set up, Audience Network can be switched on automatically through automatic placements, so check rather than assume. For traffic, WhatsApp and lead goals, the clicks there are often cheap and accidental, from people inside other apps who were not looking for a trip, and some advertisers find leads from game apps with no value. They inflate your click count and push your cost per qualified inquiry up. Not every media buyer agrees, and some argue the algorithm shifts spend away from weak placements on its own, so do not take our word for it: choose placements manually (Facebook feed, Instagram feed, Stories and Reels), exclude Audience Network, and add it back later only if its qualified inquiries justify it. Look at the placement breakdown every week and cut anything that brings clicks but no qualified inquiries.

For the same set-up logic from a Ugandan operator's point of view, see our page on Meta ads in Uganda.

Remember the clock. An ad that works in the US evening reaches your inbox while the team in Kampala, Nairobi, Arusha, Kigali or Maun may be asleep. Decide who answers those inquiries and what the first automatic reply says.

Measure cost per qualified inquiry, not cost per click

Click cost tells you how cheap the traffic is, not how good it is. A qualified inquiry is one with dates or a travel window, a group size, a country, a trip that matches what you sell, and a guest who answers your first reply. Count those, divide your ad spend by them, and that is the number to manage.

Here is a made-up illustration, not a client result. Campaign A gets 1,000 clicks at 1 each and 5 qualified inquiries, so each qualified inquiry costs 200. Campaign B gets 400 clicks at 2 each, double the price per click, but a landing page filters them and 8 are qualified, so each costs 100. Campaign A looks cheaper on clicks and is twice as expensive where it counts.

What to track every week

  • Spend and clicks, by market and by placement.
  • Inquiries received, split into instant form, WhatsApp click and landing page form.
  • How many of those were qualified.
  • Quotes sent, and how long the first reply took.
  • Bookings, with the source written next to each one.

Give a campaign time to learn before you change it. Meta's learning phase is commonly described as needing about 50 optimization events in a week, and big edits can restart it, so look at the numbers after a week and decide on a fortnight. A small safari budget may never reach that volume, which is another reason to run one or two ad sets, not ten. Set up form submissions and WhatsApp clicks as separate tracked events so each route is visible.

The last column of that sheet is where most safari companies lose the sale. An inquiry that waits a day for a reply is often lost to the operator who answered in an hour. Our guide to safari inquiry follow-up sets out a reply routine, and it matters as much as the ad.

When Meta ads are not the right move, and how we work

Do not start Meta ads yet if nobody can reply to an inquiry within a few hours, if your website cannot take an inquiry properly, if you have no real photos or video of your product, or if you cannot fund the ads for at least a few weeks to let them learn. In those cases fix the basics first, because the ads will only make the gap more expensive. If you are happy with the inquiries you get from referrals and agents and do not want more, you do not need us.

Where Meta ads are the right move, we run them as part of the Safari Growth Program for safari and tour companies, lodges, camps and hotels in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Botswana. It has three phases: fill the funnel (website, search, Google Business Profile, Meta and Google ads), close it (your reservations and sales process, with training, because inquiries mean nothing if the team cannot close them) and keep the guest (support during and after the trip, reviews, repeat and referral). Growth Informer is a US-based company with remote teams around the world, including a team in Kampala, and a US team member joins client video calls. We have managed more than 100,000 US dollars of client ad spend. You get a fixed quote before work starts, and you own your code and data.

Our guarantee: "your first new inquiries within 14 days of going live, or we work free until they arrive".

Frequently asked questions

What does it cost to run Facebook ads for a safari company?

There are two costs. The ad spend goes to Meta and you set it, so it can start small and grow once inquiries come in. Our management and setup depend on the business: how many markets, how much video there is, and what your website and follow-up already look like. Send us your business name, country and what you sell and we will quote a fixed price before any work starts.

Should a safari company use Facebook ads or Instagram ads?

Both, from one campaign. Instagram Reels and Stories suit vertical video of the real experience, while the Facebook feed reaches a different age group, so check which placement gives you qualified inquiries instead of guessing. Choose the placements yourself, keep Audience Network off to start, and let the cost per qualified inquiry for each placement decide where the budget goes.

Are lead forms or WhatsApp better for safari inquiries?

Neither wins every time. Instant forms bring volume with mixed quality, WhatsApp brings warmer chats that need a fast reply, and a landing page with a short form and a WhatsApp button usually gives the best quality for the least follow-up work. Test routes against each other and compare cost per qualified inquiry.

Why should Audience Network be switched off?

Audience Network shows your ad inside other companies' apps and sites. Clicks there are often cheap and accidental, so they can inflate your click numbers without producing people who plan a safari. Choosing Facebook, Instagram, Stories and Reels placements manually and checking the placement breakdown keeps the budget where the guests are. Add it back only if it proves itself.

How soon should we expect inquiries?

Our guarantee is "your first new inquiries within 14 days of going live, or we work free until they arrive". Meta usually needs about a week to learn, so we judge results over a fortnight and never on a single day.

Can a tour operator or travel agency use Facebook ads the same way?

Yes, with different offers. A safari or tour operator shows real trip video and sends the click to WhatsApp or a quote form. A travel agency shows one specific service, such as a group trip or visa help, with a clear next step. For both, measure cost per qualified inquiry, not clicks.

Can a wedding venue or activity operator use Facebook and Instagram ads?

Yes, for local offers and enquiries, as long as someone replies fast. Use real video of the venue or the activity, send the leads to WhatsApp or a short form, and follow up the same day.
