Ecommerce platform development for the day Shopify stops being enough

We build custom online stores and multi-vendor marketplaces with seller payouts, delivery, live stock and promotion rules, or install and adapt a proven marketplace script when that is enough. If Shopify will serve you better, we tell you before you spend anything.

The short answer

Ecommerce platform development means building the store or marketplace software itself instead of renting a hosted platform: catalogue, checkout, payments, stock, delivery and admin written around how your business actually sells. It pays off when other sellers list on your platform and you must collect the money and pay them out, when stock lives across several warehouses, shops or a point of sale, or when your pricing, checkout and delivery rules have outgrown a theme and a stack of apps.

It is the wrong call for a single brand with a straightforward catalogue, where Shopify is usually faster and cheaper to start. Growth Informer Software Services, based in Kampala, Uganda, builds custom single-brand online stores for and multi-vendor marketplaces as custom software . Where a proven marketplace script fits, we install and configure it for before any customisation. Every build has a fixed quote before work starts and a 50/25/25 payment plan, and the source code and data belong to you.

Single-brand store or multi-vendor marketplace?Send us on WhatsApp +256 702 946 946 your model (one brand or many sellers), how many sellers you expect at launch, orders per month, the countries and payment methods your buyers use, how orders reach them and what you sell on today, and we reply with our questions, then a written scope and a fixed quote.

Shopify, a marketplace script or a custom build: which one fits

Most people asking for custom ecommerce development do not need it yet. There are three routes, and an honest online store development company should talk some buyers out of the most expensive one.

Choose Shopify or a similar hosted platform if

  • You are one brand selling your own products, and nobody else lists on your site.
  • Your catalogue, variants and shipping rules fit the standard model with a few apps.
  • The platform supports a payment gateway in the countries you sell to.
  • You need to be trading in weeks and want to prove demand before investing in software.

Start from a marketplace script if

Ready-made marketplace software sells in volume: Active eCommerce CMS, a multi-vendor script built on Laravel, has passed 10,000 sales on CodeCanyon, with add-ons for things like delivery staff and seller subscriptions. A script gets a marketplace trading quickly on a small budget, but it is written for every buyer at once. Before you commit, check three things: whether its payment integrations cover the rails your buyers actually use, whether seller payouts run automatically or are settled by hand from an admin screen, and whether your changes will survive the author's next update. We install scripts with the licence and hosting in your company's name, and customise them for when the gaps are small.

Build custom if

  • Other sellers list on your platform, and each payment must be split, commissioned and paid out on a schedule you control.
  • Your buyers pay with MTN MoMo, Airtel Money or M-Pesa alongside cards, and neither a hosted platform nor a script handles those rails the way you need.
  • Stock must stay accurate across several shops, warehouses and a point of sale in real time.
  • App subscriptions and platform transaction fees now cost more each year than owning the software would.
  • Your script has been customised so heavily that every update from its author breaks something.

There is a middle route too: keep Shopify as the storefront and build only the missing piece, such as a vendor portal or delivery dispatch, as a custom app connected through Shopify's APIs. If you sell in East Africa and simply need a well built single-brand store, our ecommerce website service in Uganda is the lighter option.

What multi-vendor marketplace development actually involves

A marketplace is two products sharing one database: a shop for buyers and a business tool for sellers, with you in the middle holding the rules and often the money. Most weak marketplace builds get the storefront right and the seller side wrong. These are the modules we scope on every multi-vendor marketplace project.

Vendor onboarding and verification

Application, document upload, bank or mobile money payout details, an approval queue and a status the vendor can see. The checks you apply to sellers are your obligation as the operator, and a payment provider that splits funds to sellers will usually run its own identity checks on each one as well. We build the flow so both happen without the vendor typing the same details twice.

Vendor portal

Product and variant management with bulk upload, stock per location, an order queue, packing slips, returns, payout statements and sales reports. If sellers cannot run their day from the portal, they message your support team instead, and your margin disappears into admin.

Catalogue control

Moderation before listings go live, category-specific attributes, duplicate detection, prohibited item rules, and search and filters that still work when forty sellers describe the same product forty different ways.

Order splitting, commissions and disputes

One basket with items from three sellers becomes three sub-orders, each with its own fulfilment, delivery fee, commission and status. Commission can vary by category, seller tier or promotion, and refunds, partial returns and disputes must reverse exactly the right amounts from the right party.

Payments and payouts: where marketplaces go wrong

Taking a payment is the easy part. The hard part is knowing, at any moment, how much of the money belongs to you, how much belongs to each seller, and how much is committed to refunds that have not happened yet.

Split payments through a provider built for marketplaces

For most marketplaces the safest design lets a payment provider collect and split the money, so your platform is not holding seller funds on its own balance. Stripe Connect and Adyen for Platforms are built for this, including seller onboarding checks, and Paystack and Flutterwave both offer subaccounts that split a payment between you and a seller. Paystack settles each split in one currency at a time, so a marketplace trading across several countries needs its payout design planned market by market. Whether your model needs a licence to hold or move seller money is for you to confirm with a lawyer in each market you operate in; we design the architecture so that conversation is short.

Mobile money payouts

Where sellers expect to be paid to MTN MoMo, Airtel Money or M-Pesa, payouts run through disbursement APIs with asynchronous confirmation, retries and a clear record of what failed and why. Our payment gateway integration services explain how we put cards and mobile money behind one internal payment interface.

A ledger, not a balance column

Every order, commission, delivery fee, refund, chargeback and payout is written as ledger entries, so a seller statement always reconciles with the provider settlement. It is the same double-entry approach behind Moyo Pay, our own dual-currency wallet with Mobile Money and USSD, and it is what lets you hold a reserve, release payouts only after delivery is confirmed, and recover a refund from a seller who has already been paid.

Buy now, pay later at checkout

On larger baskets, instalment options can lift conversion. Adding an existing provider such as Klarna, Afterpay (known as Clearpay in the UK), or Tabby and Tamara in the Gulf is a checkout integration: providers of this kind typically pay you upfront and take on the shopper's credit risk, while returns and refunds still come back to you. Offering your own instalment credit is a different product, with licensing and credit decisions that fall on you as the lender; our BNPL software development page covers what that involves.

Delivery, stock and promotions that hold up at scale

Delivery integration

On a marketplace, one basket from three sellers in different parts of a city is three pickups. We either charge delivery per seller or consolidate parcels at a hub, and in both cases the buyer sees one clear fee and one tracking page. We connect courier and multi-carrier shipping APIs for zones, rates and labels, or build dispatch for your own riders with live status and proof of delivery. Delivery status feeds back into the order, so seller payouts can wait for confirmation. If you run your own riders or vans, delivery and logistics software development covers dispatch, rider apps and cash on delivery reconciliation in more depth.

Stock that stays true

Stock per SKU and per location, reserved when an item enters checkout and released if payment fails, so two buyers cannot pay for the last unit. Sync with an in-store point of sale, low-stock alerts, and batch and expiry tracking where you sell food, cosmetics or medicines. We solve the same reservation and sync problems in Growth Informer Business, our own live cloud POS, inventory and business platform, so the edge cases are familiar rather than theoretical.

Promotions with rules you can trust

Coupon codes, automatic basket discounts, buy X get Y, tiered pricing, flash sales with start and end times, per-customer limits and budget caps. On a marketplace every promotion also needs a funding rule: whether the platform or the seller bears the discount, and whether commission is calculated before or after it. Stacking rules decide what happens when three promotions hit one basket, and leaving that question unanswered before launch is how margin quietly disappears.

What ecommerce platform development costs

Every build is quoted fixed against a written scope before work starts. You pay 50 percent to begin, 25 percent at the review build and 25 percent on delivery. The figures below show as a US dollar range for your region.

Ecommerce and marketplace scopes and what each includes
ScopeTypical investmentWhat you get
Marketplace script installed and configuredInstallation on hosting in your name, domain and SSL, payment gateway keys, email, categories, commission settings and a handover walkthrough; you buy the script licence
Marketplace script customisationAn extra payment rail, branding beyond the theme and workflow changes, documented so the author's updates can be applied again
Custom single-brand online storeCatalogue and variants, cart and checkout, one payment gateway, delivery zones and rates, coupons, customer accounts, order admin
Custom multi-vendor marketplace, webVendor onboarding and portal, order splitting, commission rules, split payments and payouts, ledger and statements, moderation, disputes
Buyer and seller mobile appsiOS and Android apps on the same backend, push notifications, order tracking, seller order management
Mobile money payouts or an extra payment gatewayAnother payment rail behind the same payment interface, verified webhooks, disbursements, reconciliation, refunds from admin
Support and improvements after launch, per monthMonitoring, updates when payment or courier APIs change, fixes and small improvements

Multi-location stock and point of sale sync are scoped inside the store or marketplace quote, because the effort depends on how many locations you run and which till system has to connect.

Why this costs less than a London or New York agency. We use the same mainstream frameworks, the same payment provider documentation and the same code review discipline. The difference is the operating cost where the work is done, not shortcuts in the build.

Why it is safer than the cheapest freelancer. A marketplace is never finished at launch: gateways change their APIs, couriers change their rates and sellers ask for new reports. A freelancer can be excellent and still vanish mid-build. We are a team in Kampala that stays after handover, and you own the source code and the data either way.

How a build runs, from quote to first sale

We start with a short scoping conversation on WhatsApp or a call: business model, seller count, countries, payment rails, delivery model and what you sell on today. You then receive a written scope and a fixed quote, including our honest view on whether Shopify, a script or a hybrid would serve you better.

  • Scope and design: flows for buyers, sellers and your admin team, a payment and payout map, and the data model.
  • Core build: catalogue, checkout, payments and the ledger first, because everything else depends on the money being right.
  • Review build: a working platform on staging, tested with sandbox payments and a few of your own sellers.
  • Launch and handover: production deployment, product and seller import, admin training and the source code in your repository.
  • After launch: the same team that built the platform supports it.

What stands behind the quote: 37 live website and app builds you can inspect on our portfolio; Moyo Pay and Growth Informer Business, our own live payment and inventory software; Karibu, our travel SaaS; and more than a hundred thousand US dollars of client ad spend managed, so product pages and conversion tracking are built with paid traffic in mind. We work on East Africa Time (UTC+3) all year, two to three hours ahead of the UK depending on the season and on the same clock as Saudi Arabia, so our working day overlaps most of yours in the UK, Europe and the Gulf.

Frequently asked questions

How much does ecommerce platform development cost?

A custom single-brand online store typically costs , and a multi-vendor marketplace built as custom software starts . If a proven marketplace script fits, installation and setup is plus the licence you buy. The figure moves with seller features, payment rails, delivery integration, stock locations and mobile apps, and every project gets a fixed quote before work starts, paid 50/25/25.

Should I use Shopify or a ready-made marketplace script instead of a custom build?

If you are a single brand with a standard catalogue and a supported payment gateway where you sell, Shopify is usually the faster and cheaper start. If you need a marketplace on a small budget, a script such as Active eCommerce CMS can get you trading, provided its payment rails and payout handling match your model. Custom development earns its cost when sellers must be paid automatically, when buyers pay with mobile money alongside cards, when stock spans several locations and a point of sale, or when fees and workarounds have outgrown the cost of owning software. We tell you which side you are on before you pay anything.

Can a custom marketplace pay sellers automatically?

Yes. We usually split each payment through a provider built for marketplaces, such as Stripe Connect or Adyen for Platforms, or Paystack and Flutterwave subaccounts in African markets, and pay sellers to bank accounts or mobile money on the schedule you set. A ledger records commissions, fees, refunds and reserves so every seller statement reconciles. Confirming whether your model needs a licence to hold or move seller funds is your obligation as the operator, with a lawyer in each market.

Who owns the code, and can we move to another developer later?

You own the source code and the data. The code sits in a repository you control and is built on mainstream frameworks, so another competent team could take it over. We would rather keep your business by being useful than by locking you in.

Do you build ecommerce platforms for businesses in the UK, US, Europe and the Gulf?

Yes. Work is delivered remotely against a fixed quote, with regular check-ins and code in your own repository. We are on East Africa Time (UTC+3), which overlaps the UK, European and Gulf working day, and you can reach us on WhatsApp +256 702 946 946.
