The short answer
Most Zanzibar boutique hotels and beach lodges can bring a real share of their bookings back to themselves by making it easy and worthwhile to book direct. That takes four things: a fast website that shows each room, the beach and the season honestly; a small deposit step that works for cards and local mobile money; a complete Google Business Profile with Google's free hotel booking links; and a simple offer for guests who first found you on an OTA (an online travel agent site such as Booking.com or Expedia). It will not replace the OTAs overnight, and most hotels should keep them for new guests and low season. But every guest who books direct is a stay where no OTA commission is paid. We do not quote a commission rate here because it depends on your contract; put your own figure into the OTA commission calculator to see what it costs you.
Beach stays are a different buying decision from safari. A guest choosing a safari compares operators and parks. A guest choosing a Zanzibar beach compares rooms, the beach, the tides, the season and package deals, often after a mainland safari. Your site has to answer those questions better than a listing page can. This is part of our lodge and hotel marketing work, and the full offer is on the direct booking system page.
Why a Zanzibar beach stay is not a safari booking
On a safari, the guest buys a journey: the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, the dates, the guide, the vehicle. On Zanzibar, the guest buys a place to rest, usually for fewer nights, usually after something tiring. Many arrive straight from a safari with a flight date already fixed and a partner asking, "Which beach is best in the month we land?"
That is why OTA pages win so many Zanzibar bookings: they put rooms, photos and reviews side by side. You can do the same on your own site, and add what a listing page cannot:
- Which beach, honestly. On the east coast, around Paje and Jambiani, the tide goes out a long way, so at low tide the sea can be far from your beach bar. Nungwi and Kendwa in the north are widely described as easier for swimming at any tide. Tell guests what to expect at your beach, and show the tide times for the month they are visiting.
- Season in plain words. The long rains usually fall from about March to May, with April often the wettest month. Short rains come around November and December, the long dry months run from about June to October, and January and February are hot and mostly dry. Guests from the US, UK and Europe plan around this, so say what your property is like in each part of the year.
- Getting there. How far you are from the airport and Stone Town, and how guests arrive by flight or by ferry from Dar es Salaam.
- Bush and beach packages. A simple "safari then beach" stay, with your nights set out clearly, so the guest does not have to build it alone. If you work with safari companies, our Tanzania safari marketing guide shows how guests move between the two.
What a Zanzibar hotel booking site must do
A direct booking site for a Zanzibar hotel is not a brochure. It is the one place where a guest can choose a room, see what it costs, and secure the stay. At minimum it needs:
- Clear rates with a note of what is included (breakfast, transfers, taxes and service charges). One caution on currency: Tanzania tightened its foreign currency rules in 2025, and official statements differ on whether hotel stays for visitors may be quoted in dollars. Confirm the current rule with the Bank of Tanzania or your accountant before you publish rates. We build the site to show whichever currency you are allowed to use.
- A page for each room type, with real photos, the walk to the beach, and a short plain description of the tide and season.
- Availability checks, or a quick enquiry form that reaches you and a WhatsApp button that actually gets answered.
- Cancellation terms written in everyday words, shown before the guest pays.
- Pages that load fast on a phone and on weak mobile data, because many guests compare hotels while still travelling.
Here is how that compares with depending only on OTAs. We keep this in words, because the right mix depends on your hotel.
| What matters | Your own direct booking site | Relying on OTAs only |
|---|---|---|
| Guest details | You hold the guest's email and WhatsApp, so you can write before arrival and after the stay. | The platform's rules decide what you can send and when. |
| Commission | No OTA commission on those bookings, though you still pay for the site, payment fees and your time. | The OTA takes its commission on every booking, at the rate in your contract. |
| Rates and packages | Your own rates, your own wording, and bush and beach packages you design. | Your rooms follow the platform's format and its list of rooms. |
| Deposit | A deposit by card or mobile money, with the balance on arrival. | Payment follows the platform and the rate chosen. |
| Finding new guests | Needs work: Google, search, and your own offers. It builds slowly. | The OTA brings its own visitors, which is why most hotels should keep it for new guests and low season. |
A deposit step that works for local and overseas guests
A deposit is what turns a direct enquiry into a booking. Without one, a message saying "we would like to stay in March" is easy to lose, and guests can still be comparing five other hotels. A small deposit also protects you against empty rooms.
Your guests do not all pay the same way, so the deposit step should not either:
- Overseas guests usually want to pay by card and see the amount, in their own currency where the rules allow, before they confirm.
- Guests in Tanzania and East Africa often prefer local mobile money. In Tanzania the big ones are M-Pesa, Mixx by Yas (the new name for Tigo Pesa) and Airtel Money. A bank transfer is the other common choice. Our guide to accepting mobile money payments online in East Africa explains the options.
- Everyone should see the deposit, the balance and the cancellation rule in plain words before paying, and get a confirmation by email and WhatsApp straight after.
The size of the deposit is your choice, for example the first night or a share of the total. A guest who is still on safari in the Serengeti may have patchy signal, so keep the deposit page light and let them pay from a phone. One honest warning: taking card payments from abroad into a Tanzanian business account needs a payment provider who will serve your business, and the checks take time. We tell you which options fit your hotel before we build, not after.
Google, free booking links and an offer for OTA guests
Google Business Profile
When someone searches for hotels in Nungwi or Paje, Google shows the map and profiles first. A complete profile, with the right category, real photos of the rooms and beach, the website link, and replies to reviews, costs nothing to maintain and sends guests to you.
Free Google hotel booking links
Google lets hotels show their own booking link in hotel search results, next to the OTA prices, at no cost for the clicks. A hotel joins either through Google's Hotel Center or through a booking software provider that is already connected to Google and can share your live rooms and rates. Google can change its rules, so we check the current steps with you before we promise it, and we do not guarantee that you will appear.
A simple offer for guests who found you on an OTA
A guest who stayed with you through an OTA is the easiest direct booking you will ever win, because they already like you. Keep the offer small and real:
- Leave a card in the room and send a thank-you message on WhatsApp after the stay, inviting them to book their next stay, or a friend's stay, direct.
- Offer something that costs you less than the commission, such as a late checkout, a transfer, a welcome drink or a beach dinner.
- Check your OTA contract first. Do not pull a guest away from the OTA before they have booked there; the offer is for after the stay, or for their next trip.
When this is not for you, and how to start
This is not for everyone. If your hotel is already full at rates you are happy with, you may not need us. If nobody answers WhatsApp or email within a day, fix that first, because a direct site will only make missed messages more costly. And if you hope to leave the OTAs completely next month, that is not a realistic plan. If the software you already use to update your rooms on the OTAs also gives you a good booking page, you may only need the Google profile and the guest offer.
If it does fit, our Safari Growth Program works in three phases: fill the funnel (bring in enquiries through your website, search, Google Business Profile, and Facebook, Instagram and Google ads), close it (a reservations process and training, because inquiries mean nothing if the team cannot close), and keep the guest (support during and after the trip, reviews, repeat stays and referrals). We promise "your first new inquiries within 14 days of going live, or we work free until they arrive".
Growth Informer Software Services is a US-based company with remote teams around the world, including a team in Kampala, Uganda. We built the Lorato Lodges and Camping site in Chobe, Botswana, with landing pages and a direct booking form. Send us the business name, country, what you sell and where inquiries come from today, and we will tell you plainly whether we can help.
Frequently asked questions
What does a Zanzibar hotel direct booking site cost?
It depends on the size of the hotel, the number of room types, the languages and the payment methods you need. We give a fixed quote before any work starts, so send us your hotel details on WhatsApp or the form and we will price it for your property.
Can my hotel stop using Booking.com?
Most hotels should not stop at first. OTAs bring new guests, especially in low season. The aim is to move guests who already know you, such as returning and referred guests, to book direct, and to cut the share of OTA bookings over time.
Will guests really book direct after a safari?
Some will, if your site answers questions about the beach, the tides and the season, shows clear rates and makes the deposit easy. We cannot promise a number, because it depends on your hotel, your rates and your reviews.
What are Google's free hotel booking links?
They are a free way for a hotel to show its own booking link in Google's hotel results next to OTA prices. You join through Google's Hotel Center or a connected booking software provider, and Google's rules can change, so we check the current steps with you.
Can guests pay a deposit with mobile money?
Yes, it can be set up for local guests, alongside card payments for overseas guests. The exact options depend on the payment provider that accepts your business, and we confirm those before we start building.
