Lodge Marketing in Botswana That Wins Direct Bookings

Botswana is high value and low volume, so every empty night hurts and every OTA commission stings. We help Chobe, Okavango and Kalahari lodges and camps win direct bookings from self-drive travellers and from agents.

The short answer

Lodge marketing in Botswana works when a lodge or camp stops relying only on OTAs and a few agents and gives guests a way to book it directly. There are two buyers to win. The first is the self-drive traveller crossing from Namibia towards Chobe and Victoria Falls, choosing where to camp or sleep each night. The second is the safari agent or tour operator in the US, UK or Europe who needs clear rates and a fast answer. A direct booking system reaches both: a website that answers real questions, a Google Business Profile that shows up around Kasane and Maun, and a booking form or WhatsApp reply that turns interest into a held date.

That is the work behind our lodge marketing service, applied to Botswana. We fill the funnel with search, Google Business Profile and ads, close it with a reservations process your team can run, and keep the guest through the trip and after. Who actually books a Botswana lodge or camp

Botswana has long followed a high value, low volume approach to tourism, using high park fees and a limited number of camps in sensitive areas such as the Okavango and Chobe. That protects your rates, but it also means you cannot afford many empty nights. Each lodge or camp has far fewer rooms and pitches to fill than a big East African property, so the mix of buyers matters more than the headline number of visitors.

Self-drive and camping travellers

A large part of the market around Chobe and Kasane is people driving a hired 4x4, often with a rooftop tent, on the loop from Namibia through the Caprivi Strip to Kasane and on to Victoria Falls, roughly 70 km from Kasane. They plan the route at home, usually in the US, UK, Germany or South Africa, and look for a night or two in each stop. They search for campsites, lodges with camping and places near the river, and they want to know quickly if a site is free.

Fly-in and agent-sold guests

Okavango camp marketing is largely agent-facing. Many Delta camps are private concessions reached by light aircraft, and they are often sold through agents and tour operators who package the Delta with Chobe and Victoria Falls. These buyers compare you against other camps on rates, access, what is included and how quickly someone replies. Botswana is on Central Africa Time, six to seven hours ahead of the US east coast, so a message sent at an agent's lunchtime can land at your end of day.

What this means for you

Because OTAs and agents sit between you and these guests, you pay for the introduction on every booking and often never learn who the guest is. The aim is not to drop agents. It is to make sure that when a guest or agent searches for you by name, or for what you offer in your area, they find your own site first and can act straight away.

How a lodge wins direct bookings from self-drive travellers

Self-drive guests decide in stages, and each stage has a page or a message that either keeps them or loses them. Here is how we build it for a Chobe lodge, a Delta camp or a Kalahari stop.

  • Landing pages for the searches they actually make. Camping near Chobe, a stop in Kasane, a night before the Kazungula crossing towards Victoria Falls, where the Zambezi bridge replaced the old ferry in 2021, a base on the way to the Okavango. One clear page for each, with the real location, what is on site, how to arrive and what to expect.
  • A Google Business Profile that is complete and kept alive. Correct pin, opening seasons, photos, answers to common questions and a link that goes to your own booking form, not to an OTA.
  • A booking form that works on a phone, on weak mobile data. Dates, number of people, vehicle and tent type, and one tap to send. Travellers on the road do not want to download a PDF.
  • A WhatsApp reply that is quick and plain. Availability, the next step to hold the date and how to pay a deposit. Slow replies send them to the next campsite on the list.
  • Honest detail on the page. Tell people about sand and wet-season road conditions, whether the Chobe riverfront needs a 4x4, the dry months from roughly May to October against the green season from November, and what a night here includes. A green season offer for self-drive guests is also a way to fill the quieter months, when visitor numbers and prices are lower. Good detail stops the wrong guests from booking and the right guests from hesitating.

This is the kind of build we did for Lorato Lodges and Camping near Chobe: landing pages and a direct booking form so that guests can ask for dates without going through a third party. We make no claims about results here, only about what we built.

How a lodge wins agents and tour operators

Agents are not the enemy. They fill the Delta and Chobe for many camps, and a good agent relationship is worth keeping. What loses agents is a slow reply, unclear rates or a site that does not tell them what they need to quote.

We help you build an agent-ready presence that sits beside your direct offer:

  • A trade section or downloadable pack with seasonal rates, what is included, transfers from the nearest airstrip or airport, minimum stays and child policy.
  • Clear descriptions of each camp or room, written so an agent can paste them into a proposal, with good photos and a map that shows how it sits with Chobe, the Delta and Victoria Falls.
  • A named contact, a fast quote reply and a clear way to hold space. Agents book where it is easy.
  • Sample itineraries that combine your property with others on the usual routes, which helps agents see where you fit.

For how to set up and look after these relationships in more detail, see our guide to travel agent partnerships for safari companies. The direct offer and the agent offer feed each other: a strong website makes agents more confident, and agents who find you easy to work with send more repeat business.

Direct booking and agents, compared with OTAs alone

Most Botswana lodges and camps already sit on some OTAs and with some agents. The question is whether that is all you have. Here is how the two approaches compare in plain terms.

How a direct-plus-agent approach compares with relying on OTAs alone for a Botswana lodge or camp
What mattersDirect booking plus agent-ready siteOTAs alone
Who owns the guest relationshipYou do, with the guest's contact and trip details for reviews and repeat staysThe platform does, and you may see little more than a name
Cost of each bookingNo platform commission on direct bookings, though you pay to build and run the marketingA commission on every booking, set by the platform
Control of rates and wordingFull control of what you say, to whom and whenLimited by the platform's layout and rules
Speed to startTakes weeks to build and begin ranking, so it is slower at firstFast, because you are listed on an existing marketplace
Reaching self-drive travellersLanding pages and a Google Business Profile built around their searchesDepends on your OTA ranking and the platform's own fees
RiskNeeds a team that replies quickly, or the inquiries are wastedDependent on one marketplace's policies and ranking changes

Our advice is to keep the OTAs that bring you guests, but to grow the direct share so a change on one platform does not empty your diary.

Closing the inquiry and keeping the guest

Marketing only fills the top of the funnel. A lodge that gets ten inquiries and answers them a day late will do worse than one that gets six and answers in an hour. That is why our safari growth program has three phases.

Fill the funnel

Your website, search, Google Business Profile and Meta and Google ads, aimed at self-drive travellers, agents and the source markets you want, mainly the US, UK and Europe.

Close it

A reservations and sales process, with training, so your team knows how to reply, quote, follow up and take a deposit. If your staff are not yet confident at this, our safari reservations training covers it.

Keep the guest

Support during and after the trip, reviews, and repeat and referral business. For a high value, low volume destination, one happy guest who tells friends or returns is worth more than another listing.

Our guarantee, exactly as we state it: "your first new inquiries within 14 days of going live, or we work free until they arrive". See the full offer on the direct booking system page.

When we are the wrong fit, and what to send us

We are not right for every Botswana operator. Be honest with yourself about these cases.

  • If your camp is already booked well ahead through agents and you do not want more direct business, you probably do not need us.
  • If nobody on your team can reply to inquiries within a working day, fix that first, because more inquiries will not help.
  • If you want a promise of a specific number of bookings or a fixed occupancy, we cannot give that. We commit to inquiries, and the booking depends on your price, your product and your reply.
  • If you are a single small camp with no budget for any marketing, set up your Google Business Profile properly yourself before you talk to anyone.

Frequently asked questions

What does lodge marketing in Botswana cost?

It depends on the size of your property, how much needs building and which channels you want, so we do not publish a single figure. Send your business name, country, what you sell and where inquiries come from today, and we give a fixed quote before any work starts.

Can a small Botswana camp win direct bookings without leaving the OTAs?

Yes. We usually advise keeping the OTAs that bring you guests while you build your own website, Google Business Profile and booking form. Over time the direct share grows and you depend less on any one marketplace.

How do you reach self-drive travellers on the Namibia to Victoria Falls route?

We build landing pages around the searches they make, such as camping near Chobe or a stop in Kasane, keep your Google Business Profile complete, and give them a simple booking form and a quick WhatsApp reply. We built landing pages and a direct booking form for Lorato Lodges and Camping near Chobe.

How soon will we see inquiries?

Our guarantee is "your first new inquiries within 14 days of going live, or we work free until they arrive". Inquiries are not bookings, so how many turn into bookings depends on your rates, your product and how fast your team replies.

How much does a website for a lodge in Botswana cost?

It depends on the number of pages, how guests book (a quote form or a live availability tool) and how much photo and video work is needed. We do not show a price on this page. After a short call we give you a fixed quote, so you know the full cost before work starts. A Botswana camp can keep its listings on booking sites and with agents while its own website takes direct bookings. We work with lodges and camps outside Uganda.
