The short answer

Growth Informer Business is a cloud POS and stock system that fits a Ugandan hardware or building-materials shop. You set up each product with the units you sell in, such as piece, box, metre or bag. You sell for cash, card, Mobile Money or on credit, raise quotations for contractors, and keep stock for the shop and the store as two separate places with transfers between them.

It pays off when you carry hundreds of lines, more than one person handles the till, and customers buy on account. If you sell a handful of items from one counter, a notebook can still do the job. For bigger stock across many suppliers, read our guides to inventory management software in Uganda and wholesale distribution software.

Why a hardware shop is harder to run than other shops

A pharmacy or a supermarket mostly sells one item at a time, in the same unit it bought. A hardware shop does not. Cement leaves as a bag. Wire and pipes leave by the metre or the length. Nails leave by weight. Iron sheets differ by length and thickness. Tiles are bought by the box and sold by the box or by the piece. Paint comes in sizes and colours. Every one of these is a chance for the stock book to drift away from the real shelf.

Units and variations

In Growth Informer Business each product carries a unit, and products can have variations such as size and colour. That lets the till and the stock record speak the same language as your counter staff. You can also print barcode labels, so a pipe or a tin of paint is scanned instead of searched for.

Be honest about setup

Units are the part to get right on day one. If you sell the same item in more than one way, bring your hardest product to the demo and we will set it up in front of you, so you can see whether it fits how your shop really sells before you decide anything.

Credit to contractors, and getting paid

Many hardware sales are not cash. A contractor takes cement and iron bars today and settles when the client pays him. That is normal, and it is also where shops lose money, because nobody can say quickly who owes what.

  • Keep every contractor as a customer and record a sale on credit against his name.
  • Record each payment when it comes in, so the balance he owes is always on screen.
  • Use selling price groups to keep a contractor price separate from the walk-in price.
  • Use users and roles to decide which staff can see or do what at the till.

Mobile Money, as it really works

You can record cash, card or Mobile Money as the payment method in the Multiple Pay window, and the Payments (MoMo) tray records confirmed payments. The system does not send a payment prompt to the customer's phone. The customer pays you as usual, you confirm it, and then you record it. The system also does not chase the debt for you, so someone in the shop still has to make the call.

Quotations, shop and store stock, and supplier price rises

Quotations and drafts

A builder rarely buys on the first visit. He asks for a price for a whole list. You can prepare a quotation, save a sale as a draft, and turn it into a sale when he comes back with the money or the truck.

Shop and store

Most hardware businesses keep a small display in the shop and the bulk in a store or yard. Stock is held per location, and you move goods between locations with a transfer, so the shop shelf and the store each have their own count. If you add a second branch later, it is another location in the same system. Counting is still a human job, but a clear record per place makes the gaps easier to see. Our guide on how to stop stock theft in a shop in Uganda explains the habits that go with it.

When suppliers raise prices

Prices of building materials move. Record the new cost when the stock arrives through purchases and suppliers, then update your selling prices, so you know your margin on the next bag and not only the last one. The reports show what sold and what is left.

Notebook or spreadsheet, or a proper POS?

A notebook and a spreadsheet are cheap and familiar, and they are enough for a very small shop. This table shows where they stop being enough.

How to start, and who stands behind it

Do not try to load everything at once. Start with your fastest sellers, count the opening stock for the shop and the store, enter your regular contractors with what they owe, and run the system alongside the notebook for a short while. Then add the slow lines.

If your business is VAT-registered, the system lets you switch EFRIS e-receipts on or off. What your own business must do is a question for URA, so check the current rules on the URA website, and read our guide on EFRIS for shops and supermarkets to see how it applies to a shop like yours.

When this is not for you

Be straight with yourself before you book a demo.

  • If you sell a few items for cash from one counter and keep it all in your head, you do not need software yet.
  • If nobody in the shop will enter sales at the till, no system will fix your stock. The habit comes first.
  • If you need a feature built only for your business, a custom system is a separate conversation and a different budget.

If you are a shop with growing stock, contractors on credit and a store at the back, a demo takes little time and shows you quickly whether it fits.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a hardware shop POS cost in Uganda?

It depends on your business: how many users and locations you have, and whether you need help with setup and training. We do not publish a figure on this page. Ask for a demo on WhatsApp or through the form, tell us about your shop, and we will give you a clear answer for it.

Can I sell the same product in different units?

Products in Growth Informer Business have units, and can have variations such as size and colour. Because hardware shops sell in many ways, bring your trickiest product to the demo and we will set it up with you, so you can confirm it fits before you commit.

Can I give contractors credit and see what they owe?

Yes. You can record sales on credit against a customer, record the payments when they come in, and see the balance for each customer. The system does not chase the payment for you, so someone in your shop still follows up.

Does it send a Mobile Money request to my customer?

No. The system does not send a payment prompt to the customer's phone. You record Mobile Money as a payment method in the Multiple Pay window, and the Payments (MoMo) tray records confirmed payments.

Can I keep the shop and the store separate?

Yes. Stock is held per location, and you move goods between locations with a transfer. Each place keeps its own count, which makes it easier to see where a gap starts.

Can a customer pay a deposit and collect cement or iron sheets later?

Yes, layaway is made for this. You take a deposit, hold the goods for the customer, and record the remaining payments against the same sale. Message us on WhatsApp and we will show you how it looks with a typical cement or iron sheet order.
