App development ยท AI vs developer

Can ChatGPT build my app, or do I need a real developer?

AI tools can get you a working prototype fast, and that is genuinely useful. This guide shows where they stop being enough, so you know when to stay in the tool and when to bring in an engineer.

The short answer

AI tools can build a working prototype of your app in an afternoon, but they cannot yet be trusted to build and run a business app on their own. They are good at screens, simple internal tools, landing pages and throwaway tests. They are weak exactly where a business carries risk: payments and money handling, logins and security, data that must never be lost, changes six months later, and getting through app store review.

The sensible path is to prototype with AI to clarify the idea, then bring a developer in to harden it. If real money or customer data is involved from day one, skip the shortcut and build a proper first version. Start with where to start with an app idea, then read about SaaS MVP development and custom versus off-the-shelf software.

What AI app builders genuinely do well

Vibe coding, meaning describing an app in plain language and letting an AI tool write the code, is a real step forward for founders. It is not a gimmick, and we would not mock it. Used for the right job it saves weeks and money.

What can I safely build with AI tools myself?

  • A clickable prototype. Screens and a rough flow you can show to customers, co-founders or investors before spending real money.
  • A simple internal tool. A rota, a quote calculator or a tracker used by a few trusted staff, with no customer data and no payments.
  • A landing page. One page that explains an offer and collects a name and an email address.
  • A throwaway test. Something you will delete in a month if the idea does not get traction.
  • A better brief. Even if you hire a developer later, a working prototype shows exactly what you mean, which makes a quote more accurate. Our guide on how to write a brief for a software developer shows how to use it.

The common thread: if it breaks, nobody loses money, nobody's data leaks and nobody is locked out. Stay inside that line and AI tools are an excellent place to start.

Where AI-built apps fail a real business

Can ChatGPT or AI build my whole app for me?

It can build something that looks and feels like your whole app. The gap is that a demo only has to work when everything goes right, while a business app has to keep working when things go wrong. Cards get declined, users forget passwords, phones lose signal, someone pastes unexpected text into a form, and a payment arrives twice. Those cases are where AI-generated code tends to be thin, and where you find out after launch.

Is a vibe coded app safe to run a business on?

Not by default. The tool does not know what you must protect, and it usually cannot tell you what it left out. These are the areas where the real risk sits:

  • Payments and money handling. Your payment provider tells the app a payment succeeded by sending a message, and that message can arrive twice, late or not at all. If the app is not built for that, a customer is charged but gets nothing, or gets the order twice. Rounding, refunds and reconciliation with your books need the same deliberate design. A mistake here is a financial loss, not a bug report.
  • Security and logins. Who can see whose data, how passwords and sessions are handled, and whether anyone can reach records that are not theirs. An app can look finished and still be open: if an order page ends in a number, changing that number should never show another customer's order.
  • Data that must not be lost. Backups, restore tests, and what happens when you change the data structure on live records.
  • Changes six months later. Code written across many prompts can be inconsistent. Each new request risks breaking something that worked, and nobody can say why.
  • Anyone who must maintain it. If you cannot read the code, you depend on the tool or on a stranger. A developer inheriting it has no notes, no tests and no history.
  • App store approval. The stores review apps for privacy, payments and stability. A prototype that runs in a browser is a long way from one that passes review and keeps passing as phones and rules change.

If you are weighing a bespoke build against ready-made software for any of this, custom versus off-the-shelf software sets out the trade-offs.

A decision path: AI first, developer when it matters

When do I need a real developer?

Use the questions below, in order. The first yes sends you to the matching route.

  • Will it take payments, hold money or touch regulated records? Build a proper first version with a developer from the start.
  • Will it store customers' personal data, or let customers log in? A developer should design the logins and data handling, even if you prototype the screens with AI.
  • Do you still not know exactly what the app should do? Prototype with AI first. It is the cheapest way to find out. Read where to start with an app idea alongside it.
  • Is it for a handful of trusted staff, with nothing sensitive? Stay with the AI tool, and revisit if it becomes something the business depends on.
  • Has the prototype already got users or revenue? Have a developer review it and harden it before you scale.

Here is how the routes compare. Our prices are fixed quotes, agreed before work starts, and shown for your region.

A checklist before launching anything an AI built

Whether you hire anyone or not, run through this before real users touch the app. If you cannot answer an item, that is your next job.

  • Try to break it. Enter blank, very long and odd values in every form. Press the back button mid-payment. Switch off the connection halfway through.
  • Check who can see what. Create two test users and confirm neither can open the other's records, even by changing a link.
  • Follow the money. Make a test payment, a refund and a failed payment, and check every amount lines up with your records.
  • Test a backup and a restore. A backup you have never restored is a hope, not a backup.
  • Keep secrets out of the code. Passwords, keys and tokens should not be written into files or pasted into chat tools.
  • Know who owns it. You should hold the code, the data, the hosting account and the domain. Check the tool's terms on what you may do with the output.
  • Write down how it runs. Where it is hosted, how it is updated and who to call when it stops.
  • Check the legal basics. A privacy policy that matches what the app really collects, and a clear way for users to ask for their data to be deleted. If you sell to customers in Europe or the UK, ask a lawyer what applies to you.
  • Plan the first change. Make one small change and see whether something unrelated breaks. If it does, the app needs structure before it grows.

Can a developer fix an app that AI built?

Often yes. The honest answer is that it depends on what is underneath. A developer has to read the code before quoting. Sometimes the structure is sound and the work is securing logins, fixing the data layer and adding tests. Sometimes it is faster and cheaper to keep the screens and flows you have proven, and rebuild the inside properly. We tell you which it is, then give a fixed quote before any work starts.

How we work, and when not to hire us

Growth Informer Software Services is a US-based company with remote teams around the world, including a team in Kampala, Uganda. Our team in Kampala works East Africa Time (UTC+3), which overlaps the UK and European working day and the start of the US East Coast day, and a US team member joins client video calls. We have 37 live website and app builds on our portfolio. Payment follows a 50/25/25 plan, and you own the code and data. Our page on MVP development in East Africa explains how this works in practice.

  • Do not hire us yet if you are still testing an idea. Use the AI tool, show it to ten potential customers and come back when the answer is yes.
  • Do not hire us for a small internal tool that holds nothing sensitive and has a few users.
  • Talk to us if money, logins or customer data are involved, if a prototype has started to get real users, or if nobody on your side can maintain what you have.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT build my whole app for me?

It can produce a convincing prototype and sometimes a working simple tool. It is not reliable for payments, secure logins, data protection, long-term maintenance or app store approval, so a business app that handles money or customer data still needs an engineer to design and check it.

Is a vibe coded app safe to run a business on?

Only if it is simple and holds nothing sensitive. Once it takes payments or stores customer data, someone with security experience should review it, test it and own it before launch.

How much does it cost to have a developer build the proper version?

A proper first version for one platform starts from , quoted as a fixed price before work starts. The final figure depends on features such as payments, logins and integrations.

Can a developer fix an app that AI built?

Often yes. The developer reads the code first, then either hardens it or keeps the proven screens and rebuilds the inside. A good one will tell you which route is cheaper before you commit.

What can I safely build with AI tools myself?

Prototypes, landing pages, simple internal tools for a few trusted staff and throwaway tests. Keep customer data and payments out of anything you build alone.
